iPhone 18 launch draws long queues; some resell devices immediately after purchase

While Apple fans queued to get their hands on the latest iPhone 18 Pro models on Friday (Sept 18), some buyers were already looking to sell their newly purchased devices.

At the Apple Store on Orchard Road, foreign nationals were seen approaching customers who had purchased the new ones, offering to buy the devices from them.

Customers were allowed to purchase up to two iPhones each, but several of the buyers observed outside the store appeared to have bought much more.

Some were seen carrying more than 15 Apple shopping bags believed to contain iPhones.

One buyer offered $140 above the phone's market price.

AsiaOne spoke to foreigners who were looking to buy the phones during the launch. They said they were willing to pay above Singapore's retail prices because the devices are more expensive in their countries due to taxes.

They added that some of the phones were being bought for family and friends, while others were intended for resale.

In one instance, a buyer reportedly purchased an iPhone from Courts Nojima nearby before immediately approaching those looking to buy it.

The activity was reportedly also seen at Jewel Changi Airport's outlet, where security personnel reportedly removed people attempting to conduct such transactions inside the premises, with buyers and sellers subsequently moving outside to seal the deal.

Long queues for latest iPhone models

The resale activity came as customers turned up across Singapore to collect Apple's latest Pro models.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max officially launched in Singapore on Friday, with pre-orders having opened on Sept 12.

According to The Straits Times, about 140 people were already in an orderly queue outside the Apple Store at 7.40am, and it grew to around 200 people by the time the store opened.

One customer, Narayan Kati, told AsiaOne that they had been queuing since 5am to purchase the new iPhone in his favourite colour, burgundy.

As the 8am opening time drew closer, Apple staff led customers in a five-minute countdown before the doors opened.

Customers who pre-ordered the devices were able to collect them at an Apple Store, while others could have them delivered.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,899, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $2,099.

Both models are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options, in black, silver, glacier and the new burgundy finish.
