Temporary Government relief for 3 public waste collection companies hit by high fuel prices

The National Environment Agency (NEA) will provide a targeted and time-bound relief to alleviate the cost impact of higher diesel costs faced by three public waste collection companies in Singapore.

The three NEA-licensed public waste collectors (PWCs) are: ALBA W&H Smart City, Cora Environment and 800 Super Waste Management.

In a LinkedIn post on Friday (Sept 18), Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary said the Government had received feedback earlier this year from the waste management sector regarding higher operating costs amid geopolitical uncertainties.

The US-led war with Iran, ongoing for over six months now, resulted in global oil prices crossing the US$100 per barrel mark between April and May.

That, in turn, led to soaring fuel prices around the world.

In April, the Government announced almost $1 billion in support measures for households and businesses that included targeted support for platform workers, private-hire car and taxi drivers .

Companies providing essential transport services , such as those for school students, seniors, and persons with disabilities also received temporary aid in co-funding cost increases.

These were intended to ensure that services can continue without disruption.

But the three public waste collectors were not included then.

"This targeted and time-bound measure will help alleviate the exceptional fuel cost impact faced by PWCs in providing essential public waste collection services across Singapore," the senior minister of state said in his post.

The relief will offset part of the additional diesel costs incurred by the three collectors from March to May this year and is apportioned according to the number of domestic and trade premises they each serve.

They can expect to receive the support by this month, he added.

"NEA has taken a proactive approach in working closely with service providers to sustain essential public waste collection services through periods of volatility.

"I hope this spirit of partnership will become a wider practice across the industry, so that we collectively ensure the continuity of waste management services that support our daily lives and businesses," Janil said.
