MCA thanks King over Najib’s pardon, pledges to uphold constitutional supremacy

The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has expressed gratitude to Sultan Ibrahim for granting a conditional royal pardon to former Prime Minister Najib Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, contingent on a RM50 million fine.

MCA President Wee Ka Siong emphasized the party's commitment to uphold the Constitution and the Rule of Law while respecting both judicial verdicts and the King's constitutional prerogatives.

The decision, confirmed by the Legal Affairs Division, underscores the balance between judicial integrity and royal discretion.

Meanwhile, the DAP has convened an emergency meeting to discuss its stance, highlighting ongoing concerns about the financial burdens of the 1MDB scandal and the importance of addressing corruption judiciously.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — MCA has expressed its gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for granting a conditional royal pardon to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

In a statement today, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said that honouring the Pardons Board’s decision does not negate the courts' earlier conviction of Najib, just as respecting judicial verdicts does not diminish the King’s constitutional prerogative to grant clemency.

Both avenues, he noted, represent fundamental components of Malaysia’s constitutional architecture.

“MCA expresses our utmost gratitude for the royal assent granted by His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, regarding the conditional pardon of Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak,” Wee said.

Wee affirmed that MCA will continue to champion the Supremacy of the Constitution and the Rule of Law as enshrined in the Rukun Negara, while upholding the constitutional monarchy as a vital pillar of the federation.

He added that the party remains resolute that national institutions must be honoured, the law upheld, and institutional integrity safeguarded.

The statement follows an announcement by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department confirming that Sultan Ibrahim consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon.

The decree allows the former premier to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to settling a RM50 million fine, following the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board at Istana Negara.

Earlier, DAP announced an emergency Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting for tomorrow to deliberate its formal position.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke previously underlined the immense financial legacy of the 1MDB scandal, citing Finance Ministry data showing RM51.4 billion in state-borne liabilities, while insisting that judicial findings on corruption must never be sidelined.

Speaking after Friday prayers in Putrajaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the royal clemency does not dilute the government’s determination to eradicate corruption, noting that while his role was to advise on legal parameters and national stability, final discretion rests exclusively with the King.

马华公会主席拿督斯里魏家祥今天发表声明称，尊重赦免委员会的决定并不否定法院先前对纳吉的定罪，正如尊重司法判决并不削弱国王行使宪法赋予的赦免权一样。

他指出，这两条途径都代表了马来西亚宪政架构的基本组成部分。

“马华公会对于苏丹易卜拉欣陛下有条件赦免前首相拿督斯里纳吉表示最深切的感谢，”魏家祥说。

魏家祥重申，马华公会将继续捍卫宪法至上和国家原则所载的法治，同时维护君主立宪制作为联邦的重要支柱。

他还补充说，该党仍然坚定地认为，必须尊重国家机构，维护法律，捍卫机构的完整性。

此前，首相署法律事务司宣布苏丹易卜拉欣同意有条件赦免纳吉布。

在国家皇宫举行的联邦直辖区赦免委员会第 64 次会议后，该法令允许这位前总理在缴纳 5000 万令吉罚款后，在家监禁至 2028 年 8 月 23 日，以服完剩余刑期。

此前，民主行动党宣布将于明日召开紧急中央执行委员会（CEC）会议，商讨其正式立场。

民主行动党秘书长陆兆福此前强调了1MDB丑闻造成的巨大经济影响，并援引财政部的数据显示，国家承担的债务高达514亿令吉，同时坚持认为，绝不能忽视有关腐败的司法调查结果。

周五在布城祈祷后，首相拿督斯里安华·易卜拉欣重申，国王的赦免不会削弱政府根除腐败的决心。他指出，虽然他的职责是就法律参数和国家稳定提供建议，但最终的决定权完全属于国王。
