Muhyiddin confirms Bersatu alliance talks started, denies Jana Wibawa court outcome tied to Pakatan cooperation

Bersatu, led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is engaging in discussions with various political parties to explore potential alliances ahead of Malaysia's 16th General Election, although no definitive agreements have been reached.

Following the conclusion of its collaboration with PAS, Bersatu remains open to partnerships with parties that respect its core principles.

Muhyiddin emphasized the importance of alliances, citing past electoral experiences, and mentioned openness to negotiations with coalitions like Pakatan Harapan.

Concurrently, Muhyiddin addressed recent court decisions acquitting him of several charges, clarifying they are unrelated to political maneuvers.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — Bersatu has held talks with several political parties on forming a new political alignment ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), with party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin saying no decision has been reached yet.

He said Bersatu is open to working with any party that respects its fundamental principles, after the party’s political cooperation with PAS formally ended in June.

“Generally, I have said there have been meetings with several political parties. I mentioned extending an invitation to meet and discuss,” Harian Metro reported him telling reporters after Bersatu’s 10th anniversary celebration here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu could not favour any one party when determining its future political alignment, adding that the party had always maintained it could not contest elections alone and needed to work with others.

“We were tested when we contested alone in the Negeri Sembilan state election, and that experience proved our position that cooperation is important was correct,” he was quoted as saying.

His remarks come a day after he said Bersatu did not rule out negotiations with Pakatan Harapan (PH), although he declined to identify the parties that had approached Bersatu and said the party was open to discussions with “all.”

“I did not mention them one by one; I mentioned all of them,” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani when asked whether PH was among the parties that had approached Bersatu.

Separately, PH Melaka chairman Adly Zahari confirmed yesterday that PH was negotiating with Bersatu and other parties on a possible “PH Plus” collaboration for the Melaka state election, although he said any cooperation would only be announced after negotiations were completed.

The developments come as Bersatu’s relationship with PAS has deteriorated, with Muhyiddin saying PAS had decided to end political cooperation with Bersatu rather than it being a choice made by his party.

PAS formally ended its political cooperation with Bersatu on June 8, after its Central Working Committee endorsed a June 2 decision by the party’s Syura Council on the current state and direction of ties between the two parties.

Muhyiddin also said Bersatu had been denied cooperation within Perikatan Nasional (PN), particularly by PAS, leaving the party with little choice but to consider other political options.

He said PN had originally been formed to create a clear political coalition and strengthen its component parties, allowing them to contest and win elections together.

“However, Bersatu has no choice if there are parties that decide not to continue cooperating,” he said.

Muhyiddin also denied that his recent court outcome was connected to efforts to cooperate with PH in forming a new political alignment.

On September 15, the High Court discharged and acquitted Muhyiddin of four of the seven charges he faces linked to the Jana Wibawa programme — one charge of using his position to obtain RM200 million in alleged bribes for Bersatu from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, and three money-laundering charges involving the same amount.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib had applied to discontinue the four charges under Section 254(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

But High Court judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin went further than the discharge sought by prosecutors, ruling that the interests of justice favoured a full discharge and acquittal rather than a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.

Muhyiddin said the court decision concerned the criminal proceedings against him and had nothing to do with political cooperation, while maintaining that the four charges had been baseless.

However, the Attorney General’s Chambers said the decision not to proceed with the four charges followed a professional assessment of the evidence, the evidential viability of the case, and the overall interests of the prosecution, and did not mean the charges had been brought without basis.

Muhyiddin continues to face three charges of using his position to obtain RM25.3 million in alleged bribes for Bersatu from Nepturis Sdn Bhd, Mamfor Sdn Bhd, KCJ Engineering Sdn Bhd, and businessman Azman Yusoff, also linked to the Jana Wibawa programme, with the prosecution having completed its case after calling 29 witnesses.

“我们在森美兰州选举中单独参选时经受了考验，那次经历证明了我们关于合作重要的立场是正确的，”他说道。

就在他发表这番言论的前一天，他表示土著团结党不排除与希望联盟（PH）进行谈判，尽管他拒绝透露哪些政党曾与土著团结党接触，并表示该党愿意与“所有人”进行讨论。

据 Astro Awani 报道，当被问及希望联盟是否是曾与土著团结党接触的政党之一时，他表示：“我没有逐一提及他们；我把他们都提到了。”

另外，马六甲希望联盟主席阿德利·扎哈里昨天证实，希望联盟正在与土著团结党和其他政党就马六甲州选举可能的“希望联盟+”合作进行谈判，但他表示，任何合作只有在谈判完成后才会宣布。

事态发展之际，土著团结党与伊斯兰党的关系已经恶化，穆希丁表示，是伊斯兰党决定结束与土著团结党的政治合作，而不是他的政党做出的选择。

伊斯兰党于 6 月 8 日正式结束了与土著团结党的政治合作。此前，伊斯兰党中央工作委员会批准了该党协商会议于 6 月 2 日作出的关于两党关系现状和方向的决定。

穆希丁还表示，土著团结党在国民联盟（PN）内部，特别是伊斯兰党（PAS）内部，拒绝与其合作，这使得该党别无选择，只能考虑其他政治选择。

他表示，国民党最初成立的目的是为了建立一个明确的政治联盟，加强其成员党，使它们能够共同参加并赢得选举。

穆希丁还否认他最近的法庭判决与他努力与希望联盟合作组建新的政治联盟有关。

9 月 15 日，高等法院撤销了穆希丁与 Jana Wibawa 计划相关的七项指控中的四项，并宣告他无罪——一项指控他利用职权从 Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd 为土著团结党 (Bersatu) 谋取 2 亿令吉的贿赂，以及三项涉及相同金额的洗钱指控。
