A mother has withdrawn her 14-year-old son from a religious secondary school in Rompin following his alleged assault by senior students, which was reportedly ignored by school authorities.
The incident involved severe physical abuse, including threats with weapons, prompting the mother to file a police report and seek medical examination for her son.
In response, Rompin police have detained five senior students under investigation for rioting, with the suspects released on bail as investigations continue.
The mother is arranging for her son's transfer to ensure his safety, amidst reports of similar undisclosed incidents at the school.
KUANTAN, Sept 20 — A mother has removed her 14-year-old son from a religious secondary school in Rompin after he was allegedly assaulted by senior students at a hostel last week, Harian Metro reported.
The 40-year-old entrepreneur said she was also upset that school authorities allegedly failed to take action despite being informed about the incident, prompting her to lodge a police report and arrange to transfer her son to another school.
“I decided to go straight to the school and when I arrived at the hostel, I was shocked to see my son’s body and hands covered in bruises. The senior students allegedly involved in the incident were free to move around,” she told reporters at her home in Bukit Rangin here yesterday.
The woman said the incident happened on September 12 when five senior students allegedly called her son and a friend to their hostel room at about midnight and reprimanded them for leaving the school grounds without permission.
She alleged that the students then blindfolded her son before punching him in the stomach, kicking his back, slapping his face and hitting him with a broomstick.
“They mistreated him for more than an hour and threatened to hurt him with a folding knife and a piece of glass,” she said.
She said her son reported the incident to the school management but no action was taken.
The woman said her son later contacted his father from a public telephone on Sept 16 after learning that the senior students were allegedly planning another attack.
She said that when she contacted the hostel warden, she was told not to come to the school as the matter had already been resolved.
“I then lodged a police report on September 17 and took my son to hospital for an examination,” she said.
The mother of two said she was later told by other parents that several students had allegedly been assaulted by senior students previously, but the incidents had never been disclosed by the school.
She said her son had been left to treat his injuries himself and that she was relieved he had survived the alleged assault.
Fearing for his safety, she told him to pack his belongings on Sept 16 and is now arranging for him to transfer to another school.
Harian Metro also reported Rompin deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohamad Zamri Mohamad Zaber saying that five students have been detained after two victims lodged separate reports at about 1pm on September 17.
He said the suspects comprised three Form Five students and two Form Four students, and all had been questioned to assist investigations under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
The offence carries a maximum two-year jail term, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
“Both victims sustained injuries believed to have been caused by the attack. All the suspects have been released on police bail,” he was quoted as saying.
