Singaporean MMA fighter Tiffany Teo books Asian Games final berth

Tiffany Teo defeated India’s Suchika Tariyal in the women’s traditional 60kg semi-final on Sept 21.

NAGOYA – Singaporean mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Tiffany Teo is one victory away from a gold medal in her Asian Games debut , after the 36-year-old triumphed in the semi-finals on Sept 21.

At the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center, Teo defeated India’s Suchika Tariyal in the women’s traditional 60kg semi-final.

The veteran athlete advances to the final on Sept 22, where she will face Khilola Sobirova of Uzbekistan, who beat Cambodia’s Cheng Dalin in the earlier semi-final.

On Sept 20, Teo defeated her Iranian opponent Arezou Salimighalehtaki by unanimous decision in the quarter-finals to claim Singapore’s first Asiad medal in the sport.

With both losing semi-finalists awarded joint-bronze medals, Teo was assured of at least a medal regardless of the result of her semi-final.

After the overtime victory in her bout, Teo said: “I’m glad that I did enough to get the win because the gold medal has always been the end goal. So I came into this match determined to get the win.”

Looking ahead to the final, she added: “I focus on things within my control, and I believe that by putting forth my best effort, my best skill set, it will lead me to the goal of the gold medal.”

Teo’s victory in Aichi-Nagoya kicks off the second day of action at the Asian Games, with Singapore’s swimmers returning to the pool at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre a day after Gan Ching Hwee’s historic 1,500m freestyle silver medal.

The 304-strong contingent’s current medal tally includes a bronze from wushu exponent Zeanne Law in the women’s taijiquan-taijijian, with other Singaporeans in action on Sept 21 in 3x3 basketball, artistic gymnastics, shooting, table tennis, triathlon and wushu.

名古屋——新加坡综合格斗（MMA）选手蒂芙尼·张（Tiffany Teo）在9月21日的半决赛中获胜，距离她在亚运会首秀中获得金牌仅差一场胜利。

在名古屋市伊苗体育中心举行的女子传统60公斤级半决赛中，张志贤击败了印度选手苏奇卡·塔里亚尔。

这位经验丰富的运动员晋级9月22日的决赛，届时她将对阵乌兹别克斯坦的希洛拉·索比罗娃，后者在早些时候的半决赛中击败了柬埔寨的程达林。

9月20日，张在四分之一决赛中以一致判定击败伊朗对手阿雷祖·萨利米加莱塔基，为新加坡赢得了该项目在亚运会上的第一枚奖牌。

由于两名半决赛失利的选手并列获得铜牌，无论特奥的半决赛结果如何，她至少都能获得一枚奖牌。

在加时赛获胜后，特奥说：“我很高兴自己发挥出色赢得了比赛，因为金牌一直是我的最终目标。所以我带着必胜的决心参加了这场比赛。”

展望决赛，她补充道：“我专注于自己能够控制的事情，我相信，只要我全力以赴，发挥出自己最好的技能，就能实现获得金牌的目标。”

张志贤在爱知-名古屋的胜利拉开了亚运会第二天的比赛序幕，新加坡游泳运动员在颜清辉获得历史性的1500米自由泳银牌的第二天重返东京水上运动中心泳池。

新加坡代表团由 304 名运动员组成，目前奖牌总数包括武术选手罗泽安 (Zeanne Law) 在女子太极拳比赛中获得的铜牌。其他新加坡运动员将于 9 月 21 日参加 3x3 篮球、艺术体操、射击、乒乓球、铁人三项和武术比赛。
