KL mayor: Sunday flash floods hit city after Ampang, Lembah Keramat record 155mm rainfall

Flash floods in Kuala Lumpur were caused by heavy rainfall, with the Ampang and Lembah Keramat catchment areas recording up to 155.5 millimeters of rain, significantly exceeding the usual 30 mm.

The mayor highlighted that the intense rain disrupted traffic across several areas.

In a related matter, a warning was issued to the developer of the Federal Territory Affordable Housing Project (Residensi Max) for allegedly converting utility rooms into accommodation for foreign workers, following concerns from residents about the ongoing situation.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 21 — Flash floods in several parts of the federal capital yesterday were triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall recorded in the Ampang and Lembah Keramat catchment areas.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud said the 155 millimetres (mm) of rainfall recorded yesterday was more than five times the usual 30 mm in the federal capital.

“Observations showed that heavy to very heavy rain was recorded across the Klang Valley yesterday afternoon, particularly in the upstream catchment areas of Ampang, Klang Gates Dam and Lembah Keramat in Selangor.

“As of 5.30pm, Lembah Keramat recorded the highest accumulated rainfall at 155.5 mm, compared with the usual 30 mm,” he said during a press conference here today.

According to media reports, heavy rain that swept across the federal capital on Sunday afternoon resulted in flooding in several areas, including Ampang, Taman U-Thant and Jalan Ampang, disrupting traffic.

On the issue of foreign worker accommodation at the Federal Territory Affordable Housing Project (Residensi Max) on Jalan Kolam Air, Fadlun said the Commissioner of Buildings (COB) had warned the project developer against converting utility rooms into accommodation for foreign workers.

“Residensi Max remains under the developer’s supervision. Therefore, the COB has issued a warning letter to the developer, reminding the developer not to house workers in areas or rooms designated for other purposes, and we will continue to monitor the situation,” he said.

The media had previously reported concerns among Residensi Max residents over the presence of foreign nationals at the residence, with the situation allegedly having persisted for nearly a year.

Residensi Max Residents’ Association chairman Muhammed Assyafiq Ahmad Kamal reportedly expressed frustration with the management, alleging that it had refused to cooperate with residents to resolve the issue. — Bernama

“观测结果显示，昨天下午巴生谷地区出现大到暴雨，雪兰莪州安邦、巴生闸坝和克拉末谷上游集水区尤其如此。

“截至下午5点30分，克拉末谷累计降雨量达到155.5毫米，而通常情况下降雨量为30毫米，”他今天在此举行的新闻发布会上说。

据媒体报道，周日下午席卷联邦首都的暴雨导致安邦、乌丹花园和安邦路等多个地区发生洪水，交通中断。

关于位于 Jalan Kolam Air 的联邦直辖区可负担房屋项目（Residensi Max）的外籍劳工住宿问题，法德伦表示，楼宇局局长（COB）已警告该项目开发商不得将杂物间改建成外籍劳工的住宿。

“Residensi Max项目仍处于开发商的监管之下。因此，市政委员会已向开发商发出警告信，提醒开发商不得将工人安置在指定用于其他用途的区域或房间内，我们将继续密切关注事态发展。”他说道。

媒体此前曾报道，Residensi Max 的居民对公寓内有外国公民居住感到担忧，据称这种情况已经持续了近一年。

据报道，Residensi Max居民协会主席穆罕默德·阿西亚菲克·艾哈迈德·卡迈勒对管理层表示不满，指责其拒绝与居民合作解决问题。——马新社
