Over 5 months’ jail for silat instructor who kissed 14-year-old female student’s cheek

The man molested the 14-year-old girl under the guise of a traditional greeting called a "salam".

He also sent her sexually-charged text messages.

The 59-year-old man was sentenced to five months and five weeks’ jail after he pleaded guilty to one count each of molestation and being involved in sexual communication with a minor.

SINGAPORE – Under the pretext of a traditional greeting called a “salam”, a silat instructor pulled one of his students, a 14-year-old girl, towards him and kissed her forehead on two occasions, as well as on her cheek on a third.

He also sent her sexually charged text messages.

On Sept 22, the 59-year-old man was sentenced to five months and five weeks’ jail after he pleaded guilty to one count each of molestation and being involved in sexual communication with a minor.

Two other molestation charges were considered during his sentencing.

The victim cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

The Straits Times is also not naming the offender as doing so could lead to identifying her.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Lu Yi told the court that the girl started attending lessons on silat, a type of martial arts, in November 2024 and the offender was her instructor.

At the end of a lesson between November and December 2024, the man asked her to “salam” him.

Court documents stated that to perform the greeting, the teenager held the man’s hand and brought it to her forehead.

As she did so, he used the grasp he had on her hand to pull her towards him.

After that, he hugged the girl and kissed her forehead over her hijab, causing her to feel uncomfortable.

He did the same thing on another occasion between January and February 2025.

Between January and March that year, he struck again, this time kissing her cheek.

The man and the victim also communicated with each other via messaging platform Telegram in February that year. He used the “disappearing messages” function, so that the messages would be deleted after a certain period.

According to court documents, he had asked if the victim wanted to know how men were like, adding: “Don’t worry I’m open-minded.”

The man also told the victim that she could ask about “sex or anything”, and he would try to answer her questions.

Feeling it was improper for a teacher to communicate with her in such a manner, she took screenshots of the messages.

“The victim felt traumatised by the accused’s actions,” said the prosecutor.

The girl’s mother was later looking through her daughter’s phone when she came across the screenshots.

The police were alerted, and the man was arrested in March 2026.

His bail was set at $20,000 on Sept 22, and he is expected to begin serving his sentence on Oct 12.

副检察官郭鲁义告诉法庭，这名女孩从2024年11月开始学习马来武术（一种武术），而被告是她的教练。

在 2024 年 11 月至 12 月期间的一堂课结束时，该男子要求她向他“萨拉姆”（Salam，意为问候语）。

法庭文件显示，为了表达问候，这名少女握住男子的手，并将其放在自己的额头上。

她照做了，他便抓住她的手，把她拉向自己。

之后，他拥抱了女孩，并隔着头巾亲吻了她的额头，这让女孩感到很不自在。

2025年1月至2月期间，他又一次做了同样的事情。

那年一月到三月间，他又一次出手，这次是亲吻了她的脸颊。

同年2月，该男子和受害者还通过即时通讯平台Telegram进行过联系。他使用了“阅后即焚”功能，使消息在一段时间后自动删除。

根据法庭文件，他曾问受害者是否想知道男人是什么样的人，并补充说：“别担心，我思想很开放。”

该男子还告诉受害者，她可以问“关于性或任何事情”，他会尽力回答她的问题。

她觉得老师用这种方式和她沟通很不合适，于是截屏保存了这些信息。

检察官说：“被告的行为给受害者造成了精神创伤。”

女孩的母亲后来在查看女儿的手机时发现了这些截图。

警方接到报案后，于 2026 年 3 月逮捕了该男子。

9月22日，他的保释金被定为2万美元，预计将于10月12日开始服刑。
