Singaporean content creator Ng Yi Hui was sceptical when challenged to hitchhike across the island, but was proven wrong when he managed to successfully travel across the country with the help of people he met.
In a series of three TikTok videos which have garnered over 124,000 views combined, 27-year-old Ng, who is known for travelling across the globe on a budget, documented his journey across Singapore from Changi Village to Tuas.
The first video was posted on Sept 19, with one video posted per day.
Speaking to AsiaOne, Ng said that the idea to hitchhike was prompted by Chinese publication Lianhe Zaobao, which challenged him to it.
"I felt that crossing the length of Singapore would be a good way to experiment if hitchhiking in Singapore is even possible," he said.
Despite having previous hitchhiking experiences in places like China and Thailand, Ng was doubtful about doing it locally.
"I always thought that it was impossible in Singapore," he told AsiaOne, saying that people "may sometimes come across as more reserved" and thus less open to helping him out.
He added: "Singapore also felt like a place that I was more likely to get judged doing this as a local compared to as a tourist, but when I actually decided to just embrace this discomfort, it turned out to be a really fun experience."
The journey from Changi Village began at 11.30am and ended at around 4.25pm, according to Ng, who said that he was surprised that people he approached "were more curious than judgmental".
"Singaporeans who rejected me were actually more friendly than I expected. There are the usual people who understandably don't want to be bothered at all, but there were a lot of friendly rejections as well," he said.
Ng also encountered many who were not travelling in his desired direction, but encouraged him to complete the challenge.
Based on his TikTok videos, he managed to hitch rides from a range of people, including a foreign worker, an elderly couple, and a father.
Reflecting on the challenge, Ng said said that he "really enjoyed" himself.
"I usually only try things like this while traveling and am eager to get to know a new place and culture. However, the people I met at home were actually just as interesting."
He added that it was also "really heartening to be proven wrong", knowing that there are people in Singapore who would be open and willing to help.
Ng has been creating content and travelling since he graduated with a master's degree in Engineering in 2025, documenting his post-graduate life as he challenges himself to find new experiences.

尽管 Ng 之前在中国和泰国等地有过搭便车的经历，但他对在当地搭便车还是心存疑虑。
“我一直认为这在新加坡是不可能的，”他告诉AsiaOne，并表示人们“有时可能会显得比较矜持”，因此不太愿意帮助他。
他还补充道：“在新加坡，我感觉作为当地人做这件事更容易受到评判，而不是作为游客。但当我真正决定接受这种不适感时，结果却成了一次非常有趣的经历。”
据吴先生说，他从樟宜村出发，上午 11 点 30 分开始，下午 4 点 25 分左右结束。他还表示，令他惊讶的是，他遇到的人们“更多的是好奇而不是评判”。
“拒绝我的新加坡人实际上比我想象的要友善得多。当然，也有一些人出于可以理解的原因不想被打扰，但也有很多人是友好地拒绝了我，”他说。
吴还遇到了许多与他目标不一致的人，但他们鼓励他完成挑战。
根据他的 TikTok 视频，他成功搭上了各种各样的人的车，包括一名外籍劳工、一对老年夫妇和一位父亲。
回顾这次挑战，吴先生表示他“非常享受”这次挑战。
“我通常只在旅行时才会尝试这类事情，并且渴望了解新的地方和文化。然而，我在家乡遇到的人其实也同样有趣。”
他还补充说，“被证明是错的真的令人鼓舞”，因为知道新加坡有人愿意敞开心扉，提供帮助。
自 2025 年获得工程硕士学位以来，Ng 一直致力于内容创作和旅行，记录他的研究生生活，挑战自我，寻找新的体验。
