Malaysian man jailed six years in Australia for keeping Indonesian woman as slave

A Malaysian man has been sentenced to six years in Australia for enslaving and assaulting an Indonesian woman.

The court found Chong Chee Kit guilty of domestic servitude and abuse, including physical assault and control over the victim.

After serving his sentence, Chong is expected to be deported to Malaysia and will be eligible for parole in 2030.

MELBOURNE, Sept 4 — A Malaysian man has been sentenced to six years in prison in Australia after being convicted of enslaving and assaulting an Indonesian woman.

Free Malaysia Today, citing ABC News, reported that Melbourne County Court Judge Michael Cahill sentenced Chong Chee Kit, 47, after a jury found him guilty of forcing the woman into domestic servitude and subjecting her to repeated abuse.

“You treated her as a slave, that is, you used her like property you owned,” Cahill said, describing Chong’s conduct as callous and cruel.

The judge said Chong subjected the woman to physical abuse over minor mistakes, including kicking her in the face and smashing her head against a wall.

The court heard that Chong restricted her access to food and medical treatment, controlled where she went and prevented her from getting adequate sleep.

Chong will be eligible for parole in 2030 and is expected to be deported to Malaysia after serving his sentence.

A jury in May found Chong guilty of keeping the woman, who was in her 60s, in slavery between February and October 2022.

His wife, Angie Liaw, was acquitted of charges that she had helped or encouraged Chong to keep the woman in slavery.

The couple had been charged together in 2023.

The court heard Chong met the woman at a church in Malaysia in 2015 and developed what was described as a “mother-son” relationship with her.

She moved to Australia in 2017 to live with the couple, but they later returned to Malaysia without informing her, leaving her without accommodation for four years.

In 2021, they told her they had returned to Melbourne and offered to employ her for a month.

She moved into their home in early 2022 after Liaw gave birth to her second child, initially planning to stay for only a month.

The court heard Chong also made the woman borrow money from relatives to cover house rent and hospital expenses related to the birth.

She escaped from the home in October 2022 and was missing for several days before police found her and took her to hospital, where the circumstances surrounding her treatment came to light.

Slavery is a federal offence in Australia punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

The woman died of natural causes in 2024.

庄某将于 2030 年获得假释资格，预计服刑期满后将被遣返回马来西亚。

5 月，陪审团裁定 Chong 犯有奴役罪，罪名是他在 2022 年 2 月至 10 月期间奴役了一名 60 多岁的妇女。

他的妻子廖安琪被判无罪，此前她被指控帮助或鼓励张某奴役该女子。

这对夫妇于 2023 年被共同起诉。

法庭获悉，Chong于2015年在马来西亚的一座教堂结识了这名女子，并与她发展出一种被描述为“母子”的关系。

2017 年，她搬到澳大利亚与这对夫妇一起生活，但后来他们返回马来西亚时没有通知她，导致她四年没有住处。

2021年，他们告诉她他们已经返回墨尔本，并提出雇用她一个月。

2022年初，廖女士生下第二个孩子后，她搬进了他们的家，最初计划只住一个月。

法庭获悉，Chong还让该女子向亲戚借钱支付房租和与分娩相关的医院费用。

2022 年 10 月，她从家中逃出，失踪了几天后，警方找到了她并将她送往医院，在那里，有关她接受治疗的情况才得以曝光。

在澳大利亚，奴役是联邦罪行，最高可判处 25 年监禁。

该女子于 2024 年因自然原因去世。
