Police in Bukit Mertajam are searching for a motorcyclist who hit two schoolgirls, aged eight and nine, as they used a pedestrian crossing in front of a primary school in Permatang Pauh.

The girls sustained minor injuries and received follow-up treatment.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 24 — Police are tracking down a motorcyclist believed to have struck two schoolgirls while they were crossing the road in front of a national primary school in Permatang Pauh here yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said his team detected a viral video lasting approximately 30 seconds showing the incident, and preliminary investigations revealed it occurred at about 7.20am.

“The incident took place while the two pupils, aged eight and nine, were on their way to school; they were struck by the motorcycle while using the pedestrian crossing in front of the school.

They sustained minor injuries and have received follow-up treatment. Police are conducting an investigation to identify the motorcyclist and establish the actual circumstances of the incident,” he said in a statement last night.

He said that the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and urged members of the public with information to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting any nearby police station or the investigating officer Insp Hafizi Mansor at 017-566 0103.
