PAS unfazed by Perikatan suspension, says voters already know its moon symbol

PAS is prepared to contest future elections using its traditional moon symbol if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition logo is unavailable due to a suspension by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), according to vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

Mohd Amar expressed confidence in PAS's recognition among voters, asserting that a symbol change would not be problematic and highlighted the party's visibility from recent state elections.

He also suggested potential support from Barisan Nasional (BN) voters due to tensions within the PN coalition, particularly dissatisfaction with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Meanwhile, PN plans to challenge the RoS suspension legally, with the Election Commission yet to decide on their participation in upcoming elections.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — PAS is prepared to contest future elections under its own moon symbol if Perikatan Nasional (PN) is unable to use its coalition logo, party vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said.

Mohd Amar said PAS was sufficiently well known among voters for a change of electoral symbol not to pose a problem, pointing to recognition of the party in recent state elections.

“In my observation, under the current political situation, it does not matter which logo we use because people already know PAS. In the past, people did not,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia .

“With what happened in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, it can be said that even Umno supporters recognise PAS.”

He was speaking after a Friday morning religious lecture at Dataran Ilmu Kelantan in Kota Bharu today, in response to the Registrar of Societies’ (RoS) suspension of all PN activities.

The suspension took effect on September 23 as RoS considers a complaint lodged by Parti. Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, one of PN’s component parties. RoS has said the notice issued to the coalition was not a decision to cancel its registration.

Mohd Amar said that if PAS was unable to use the PN logo, reverting to its traditional moon symbol would not pose a problem.

“That is the view of some quarters, and they can say whatever they want. However, PAS has its own considerations. That is why I said from the beginning that there would be no problem if PAS had to use the moon symbol, as it did previously.

“In fact, if circumstances mean that we cannot use the PN logo, then we will use the moon symbol because that is our symbol,” he said.

Mohd Amar also suggested that PAS could attract support from some Barisan Nasional (BN) voters in contests where the two sides did not face each other directly.

“Based on my observation, BN members and supporters actually prefer the moon symbol. In fact, we can see that the BN leadership itself is more comfortable with PAS than with PN,” he said.

“One of the reasons is that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is in PN, and the majority of Umno and BN members cannot accept Bersatu.”

Mohd Amar did not cite polling or other data to support his assessment of BN and Umno voter sentiment.

He also did not dismiss suggestions that PAS was increasingly capable of operating independently, following the growing profile of its non-Muslim supporters’ wing, the PAS Supporters’ Assembly (DHPP), at the party’s recent 72nd muktamar.

He nevertheless said PAS would make its own calculations over any future electoral arrangement.

PN has said it is taking legal action to challenge the RoS suspension. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has said it had yet to receive formal notice from RoS and that questions over PN’s participation in the coming Melaka state election would be considered at its special meeting on the polls.

今天上午，他在哥打巴鲁的吉兰丹科学广场发表了一场宗教讲座，之后他发表了讲话，回应社团注册局（RoS）暂停所有国民党（PN）活动的决定。

9月23日，由于社团注册局（RoS）正在审理土著团结党（马来西亚人民党，PN的成员党之一）提出的投诉，该党的注册资格被暂停。社团注册局表示，向该联盟发出的通知并非取消其注册资格的决定。

莫哈末阿玛表示，如果伊斯兰党无法使用国盟标志，恢复使用传统的月亮标志也不会造成问题。

“那是某些人的观点，他们想说什么就说什么吧。但是，伊斯兰党有自己的考量。所以我从一开始就说过，如果伊斯兰党必须像以前那样使用月亮标志，那也不会有问题。”

“事实上，如果情况需要我们不能使用PN标志，那么我们将使用月亮符号，因为那是我们的标志，”他说。

莫哈末阿玛尔还表示，在双方没有直接对决的选举中，伊斯兰党可能会吸引一些国民阵线选民的支持。

“根据我的观察，国阵成员和支持者实际上更喜欢月亮符号。事实上，我们可以看出，国阵领导层本身也更倾向于伊斯兰党而不是国盟，”他说。

“其中一个原因是土团党在国盟，而大多数巫统和国阵成员无法接受土团党。”

莫哈末阿玛没有引用民意调查或其他数据来支持他对国阵和巫统选民情绪的评估。

在伊斯兰党最近举行的第 72 届穆克塔玛大会上，随着其非穆斯林支持者团体——伊斯兰党支持者大会 (DHPP) 的影响力日益增强，他也并未否认伊斯兰党越来越有能力独立运作的说法。

但他表示，伊斯兰党将对未来的任何选举安排做出自己的考量。

国民联盟（PN）表示将采取法律行动，挑战选举事务局（RoS）的暂停其参选资格决定。与此同时，选举委员会表示尚未收到选举事务局的正式通知，并将在选举特别会议上审议国民联盟是否参与即将举行的马六甲州选举的相关问题。
