Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Malaysia's national men's sepak takraw team for winning the team regu gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, marking the country's first victory in the event since 1990.

The squad's triumph, which involved a 2-0 victory over Thailand, not only ended a 36-year drought but also represented Malaysia's fourth gold medal at this year's Asian Games.

Describing the achievement as highly meaningful, he encouraged the team to continue bringing glory to Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated the national men’s sepak takraw squad on winning the team regu gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games today.

He described their success in ending the country’s 36-year wait to reclaim the gold medal, which was also Malaysia’s fourth gold at Asiad 2026, as a highly meaningful victory and a source of pride for all Malaysians.

“ Syabas (Well done) Malaysia. Continue to bring glory to Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Earlier, the national sepak takraw squad clinched the men’s team regu gold medal after defeating Thailand 2-0 in the final at the Paloma Mizuho Arena.

Malaysia last won gold in the event when they defeated the same opponents at the 1990 edition in Beijing. — Bernama
