Man to be charged with allegedly starting a fire in front of mosque at UOB Plaza

A 50-year-old Chinese man will be charged in court later on Sept 26 for allegedly starting a fire in front of Masjid Moulana Mohamed Ali on Sept 25.

SINGAPORE – A 50-year-old Chinese man will be charged in court on Sept 26 for allegedly causing a fire at the entrance of a mosque. In a statement early on Sept 26, police said they were alerted to a fire outside a mosque located at 80 Raffles Place at around 9pm on Sept 25.

Checks show that Masjid Moulana Mohamed Ali, which is at the basement of UOB Plaza, is located at that address.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the man had placed an oil tin at the entrance of the mosque and set fire to a piece of undergarment placed in the tin, before then leaving the location.

The fire was extinguished by a member of public and no injuries were reported.

Through ground enquiries and with the help of cameras, the man was identified and arrested, according to the police statement. The police also seized a lighter as evidence.

The man will be charged in court on Sept 26 with causing or contributing to the risk of a dangerous fire. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to one year, or fine, or both.

In their statement, the police said they “have zero tolerance against acts that endanger the lives or safety of others and (they) will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law”.

新加坡——一名50岁的中国男子将于9月26日出庭受审，他被控涉嫌在清真寺入口处纵火。警方在9月26日早些时候发表的声明中表示，他们于9月25日晚上9点左右接到报警，称位于莱佛士坊80号的一座清真寺外发生火灾。

经核实，位于大华银行广场地下室的毛拉纳·穆罕默德·阿里清真寺就位于该地址。

警方初步调查显示，该男子将一个油罐放在清真寺入口处，点燃了放在油罐里的一件内衣，然后离开了现场。

火灾被一名路人扑灭，无人受伤。

警方声明称，通过实地调查和监控录像，警方确认并逮捕了该男子。警方还缴获了一个打火机作为证据。

该男子将于9月26日出庭受审，被控造成或促成危险火灾风险。该罪名最高可判处一年监禁，或罚款，或两者并罚。

警方在声明中表示，“对于危害他人生命或安全的行为，我们采取零容忍态度，并将毫不犹豫地对公然藐视法律的人采取行动”。
