Highways congested on Chuseok holiday as people return home

SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Yonhap) -- Major roads and expressways were congested across South Korea on Saturday, the third day of the Chuseok holiday, as people began heading back to their home after visiting their hometowns.

As of 9 a.m., travel times to Seoul from the southeastern city of Busan were estimated at seven hours, six hours and 40 minutes from Mokpo, six hours from Daegju, and five hours and 20 minutes from the southwestern city of Gwangju, according to the Korea Expressway Corp.

Trips from Seoul to Busan were expected to take five hours and 10 minutes, four hours and 10 minutes to Daegu, and three hours and 20 minutes to Gwangju.

This year's holiday for Chuseok, the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving, runs from Thursday to Sunday. The holiday is marked by visits to hometowns, family reunions, ancestral rites and traditional holiday foods.

Expressways heading to Seoul began being clogged early Saturday, but traffic in the opposition direction somewhat eased.

The state-run company said congestion was expected to peak between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and ease between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday.

An estimated 5.9 million vehicles were expected to travel on roads nationwide Saturday, including about 380,000 leaving the greater Seoul area and 520,000 heading toward the capital area from other regions.

预计从首尔到釜山需要 5 小时 10 分钟，到大邱需要 4 小时 10 分钟，到光州需要 3 小时 20 分钟。

今年的中秋节（相当于韩国的感恩节）假期从周四持续到周日。节日期间，人们会回乡探亲、与家人团聚、祭拜祖先并享用传统的节日美食。

周六清晨，开往首尔方向的高速公路开始出现拥堵，但反方向的交通状况有所缓解。

这家国营公司表示，预计拥堵将在下午 4 点至 5 点之间达到高峰，并在周日凌晨 2 点至 3 点之间缓解。

预计周六全国道路上将有约 590 万辆汽车行驶，其中约 38 万辆将离开首尔都市圈，52 万辆将从其他地区前往首都圈。
