Anwar: Najib case does not change govt’s stance on corruption, those who plunder nation’s wealth must answer for it

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed the government's commitment to the Federal Constitution and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's decision regarding former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's case while asserting the nation's stance against corruption and misappropriation of national wealth.

He emphasized that while the government honors constitutional guidance, it remains essential to offer views based on jurisprudence and law.

Anwar highlighted past controversies involving institutions like Lembaga Tabung Haji, Felda, and 1MDB, stressing accountability for those accused of exploiting national assets.

Najib is serving his sentence under house arrest following a royal pardon, contingent on fines and conditions.

BANGI, Sept 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that the government abides by the spirit of the Federal Constitution and the decision of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding the case involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Anwar said, however, that this does not prevent him from providing views and advice based on jurisprudence, the law, and the nation’s interests.

He said that the government’s stance is clear that the country cannot tolerate corruption or the act of taking national wealth for personal gain.

“When we discuss the controversy surrounding Najib’s case, I abide by the spirit of the Constitution (Federal Constitution), but it does not prevent, for example, a prime minister from giving views and advice based on jurisprudence and the law.

“What do we want to convey? This country cannot tolerate corruption and the practice of plundering national wealth,” he said when speaking at the 3 Generations Appreciation Dinner: Continuing the Legacy of Struggle here yesterday.

Anwar also referred to several issues involving institutions that had previously drawn public attention, including Lembaga Tabung Haji, the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), while asserting that individuals accused of taking the nation’s wealth must bear full responsibility.

“Tabung Haji, Felda, 1MDB, people who plundered wealth must answer for it. So whatever the decision, it should not deviate from saving our country,” he said.

Najib, 73, has been serving a prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, after being found guilty in the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd funds misappropriation case.

On September 18, His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted conditional pardon to Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence for the SRC International case under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine and compliance with prescribed conditions.

Earlier, the event was also attended by the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

The event gathered over 2,000 members of the Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement, the Malaysian Islamic Da’wah Association, and the National Muslim Students Association of Malaysia. — Bernama

他说：“朝圣基金局、联邦土地发展局、一马发展公司，那些掠夺财富的人必须为此负责。所以无论做出什么决定，都不能偏离拯救我们国家的宗旨。”

现年 73 岁的纳吉布自 2022 年 8 月 23 日起在加影监狱服刑，此前他因挪用 SRC International Sdn Bhd 4200 万令吉资金案被判有罪。

9月18日，马来西亚国王苏丹易卜拉欣陛下有条件赦免纳吉布，允许他因SRC国际公司案被判处剩余刑期，但需居家监禁至2028年8月23日，并须支付5000万令吉的罚款，且须遵守规定的条件。

早些时候，出席活动的还有首相夫人拿督斯里旺阿兹莎博士和首相署部长（宗教事务）祖基菲里哈山博士。
