Dr Hasmah was ‘mother figure’ to 1992 Thomas Cup squad, says Razif Sidek

Datuk Razif Sidek described the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah as a great loss to the Malaysian badminton family, particularly the 1992 Thomas Cup squad.

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, regarded as a mother figure to the team, was praised for her support and encouragement during the Thomas Cup and Olympics.

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, passed away at the age of 100 at the National Heart Institute.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — National badminton legend Datuk Razif Sidek described the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali as a great loss to the Malaysian badminton family, particularly the members of the 1992 Thomas Cup squad who ended the country’s 25-year wait for the prestigious trophy 34 years ago.

Razif, who captained the 1992 Thomas Cup squad, said Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, who was the patron of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), was more than just a source of support for the team, as the players regarded her as a mother figure who was always close to them and concerned about their preparations.

“We regarded her as the mother of the Thomas Cup squad at the time. Sometimes, she would come to our training sessions, meet and chat with us and offer a few words of encouragement.

“We will never forget her contribution when Malaysia won the Thomas Cup in 1992 at Stadium Negara,” he told Bernama when contacted today.

Razif said apart from the sweet memory of lifting the Thomas Cup, he would also never forget Tun Dr Siti Hasmah’s support at the Barcelona Olympics that same year, where he and his younger brother, Datuk Jalani Sidek, made history by winning the country’s first Olympic medal.

He said Tun Dr Siti Hasmah’s presence in Barcelona was particularly meaningful to the national badminton players, especially for the support and encouragement she provided throughout the Games.

“Her presence meant a lot to Jalani and me and gave us added motivation to compete at the Olympics.

“Alhamdulillah, we managed to bring home the country’s first Olympic medal at the time,” said Razif, who last met Tun Dr Siti Hasmah last year.

“我们永远不会忘记她在1992年马来西亚在国家体育场赢得汤姆斯杯时所做出的贡献，”他今天接受马新社采访时表示。

拉齐夫表示，除了捧起汤姆斯杯的甜蜜回忆外，他永远不会忘记同年巴塞罗那奥运会上敦西蒂·哈斯玛博士的支持。在那届奥运会上，他和他的弟弟拿督贾拉尼·西迪克创造了历史，赢得了该国的第一枚奥运奖牌。

他表示，敦西蒂·哈斯玛博士亲临巴塞罗那对国家羽毛球队员来说意义非凡，尤其是在奥运会期间她给予的支持和鼓励。

“她的到来对贾拉尼和我意义重大，也给了我们参加奥运会的额外动力。”

“感谢真主，我们当时成功地为国家赢得了第一枚奥运奖牌，”拉齐夫说道，他上次见到敦西蒂·哈斯玛博士是在去年。
