Singapore muay thai fighter, 24, dies after tournament

A 24-year-old muay thai fighter who was taken unconscious to the hospital after a charity bout at the National Stadium on Sept 12 has died, the police confirmed on Monday (Sept 28).

Earlier on Sept 18, the police had confirmed in a statement to AsiaOne that a report was lodged following the incident.

The report was lodged at about 8am on Sept 13, said the police. The man is reportedly a Singaporean.

In their follow-up statement on Monday (Sept 28), the police said that the man was taken unconscious to hospital after taking part in the in the AMC 13 - Fight for Hope tournament on 12 September 2026.

The man subsequently passed away, said the police, adding that based on preliminary investigations, they do not suspect foul play.

Police investigations are ongoing.

AsiaOne had earlier reported that the man was in a critical condition .

Following the incident, the Singapore Muaythai Association (SMA) on Sept 17 issued a statement on its social media, confirming the incident during the Amateur Muay Thai Championship 13 — Fight for Hope.

"Medical assistance was administered by the on-site medical team before the individual was conveyed to the hospital for further medical attention," wrote SMA.

The association also said that it is in contact with the participant's family and will provide them with support during this difficult time.

SMA also emphasised that the safety and well-being of their participants as their "highest priority".

The association added that it is conducting a formal review of the incident and is working with relevant parties to establish the circumstances surrounding it.

It also rejected online claims that the 24-year-old was "knocked out", pointing out that both fighters walked off the ring unassisted.

"Both athletes were present during the announcement of results and walked off the ring unassisted. There was a medical emergency later.

“One of the athletes then required medical attention, and he was promptly assisted by on-site medics and subsequently conveyed by ambulance to the hospital," the association stated.

'Let's show some compassion'

SMA's National Head Coach, Amir Gani, sent his thoughts and prayers to Damian and his loved ones on behalf of his gym, Blessed MMA, in an Instagram post on Sept 18.

The founder and head coach of the mixed martial arts gym shared how the incident has affected the local muay thai community.

"I don't think this is the time to point fingers, argue online or try to defend the sport we love," wrote Gani.

He said: "There will be a time for the right questions to be asked, and for us as a community to learn, reflect and see how we can continue to make the sport better and safer for everyone. But for now, let's show some compassion."

He urged the public to give the deceased and his family some privacy and reminded everyone to be mindful of what is shared and speculated about online.

"Muay Thai has always taught us respect. This is one of those moments where we need to show it," wrote the coach.

事件发生后，新加坡泰拳协会（SMA）于 9 月 17 日在其社交媒体上发表声明，证实了在第 13 届业余泰拳锦标赛——为希望而战期间发生的这起事件。

SMA 写道：“现场医疗团队对该人员进行了医疗救助，之后将其送往医院接受进一步治疗。”

该协会还表示，他们已与该参赛者的家人取得联系，并将在这段艰难时期为他们提供支持。

SMA 还强调，参与者的安全和福祉是他们的“最高优先事项”。

该协会补充说，他们正在对该事件进行正式审查，并与相关各方合作，以查明事件的来龙去脉。

官方还驳斥了网上关于这位 24 岁选手“被击倒”的说法，指出两名选手都是自行走出拳台的。

“两名运动员在宣布比赛结果时都在场，并且无需搀扶就走下了赛场。之后发生了一起医疗紧急情况。”

该协会表示：“其中一名运动员随后需要医疗救助，现场医护人员立即对其进行了救治，随后用救护车将其送往医院。”

9 月 18 日，SMA 国家队主教练 Amir Gani 代表他的拳馆 Blessed MMA 在 Instagram 上发帖，向 Damian 和他的亲人表达了慰问和祈祷。

这家综合格斗健身房的创始人兼总教练分享了这起事件对当地泰拳界的影响。

“我认为现在不是互相指责、在网上争论或试图捍卫我们所热爱的运动的时候，”加尼写道。

他说：“时机成熟时，我们会提出正确的问题，我们作为一个群体也会学习、反思，思考如何才能让这项运动变得更好、更安全。但现在，让我们展现一些同情心吧。”

他呼吁公众给予死者及其家人一些隐私，并提醒大家注意在网上分享和猜测的内容。

“泰拳一直教导我们尊重。现在正是我们需要展现尊重的时刻，”教练写道。
