PM Anwar: Malaysian government to continue talks with Myanmar on refugee status

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim affirmed Malaysia's commitment to negotiate with Myanmar for a solution to the refugee issue.

The negotiations focus on ensuring safety conditions, with Myanmar agreeing to take back some refugees while safeguarding their rights.

Anwar emphasized the need for diplomatic engagement, criticizing countries for being unfairly condemnatory while addressing similar issues themselves.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Malaysian government will continue engaging with Myanmar to find an amicable solution to the long-standing issue of refugees.

He said the issue, which has remained unresolved for decades, had become more complicated as the number of refugees increased, including through negotiations on their possible return.

“That is why in our negotiations, we tie all these together.

“It is easy for them to say: ‘Don’t send them back.’ Where are we going to put these hundreds of thousands?

“So now what we want are conditions so that there is safety. That is why we invited them to negotiate,” he told reporters when met after launching the Professional Conference and Exhibition 2026 (PROFEX 2026) in conjunction with the Malaysia Professional Day.

He said without resolve and negotiations, it may lead to protests.

Anwar, in expressing appreciation that the Myanmar President had accepted the invitation, has said to allow the matter to be discussed and negotiated.

“So I’m glad that the President is kind enough to accept the invitation and we use that opportunity to discuss, negotiate and even when they agreed to bring back some of these refugees, of course we have to make sure they’ll be protected and whatever facilities be accorded.

“But just to say don’t send them back… There are a lot of concerns here too.

“No country can just accept hundreds of thousands and some countries millions. You have to be able to negotiate,” he added.

He said that the Malaysian government’s position is to protect the refugees’ welfare, human rights concerns.

“But to just condemn us for taking this initiative, I don’t think it’s fair.

“We are trying to find an amicable resolution to this issue.

“That is why I’ve invited him to continue to negotiate and see the parameters… how to resolve this.”

Further commenting, Anwar said, so far the ones sent, they will bring back their people.

“What else can we do? At least we take the trouble.

“Just push them back? No, it’s not true to say just push them back.

“We will first negotiate,” he said.

Anwar said the decision to invite the Myanmar President was important.

“They’ve been there. It’s not a perfect system.

“Some people say that ours is not perfect system too. Many countries are not perfect but still being recognised.”

“I’ve always said there’s the hypocrisy, as many of the countries in the West have been shouting against us but they can accept the atrocities by the Israeli government.

“And when it comes to here, we are trying to resolve,” he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that Malaysia was stringent in its conditions.

“What is the solution?

“As being suggested by many of this organisations, keep them here? How many hundred thousands? Two hundred thousand?

“We use this platform diplomatically to negotiate,” he said.

吉隆坡，9月29日讯——马来西亚总理拿督斯里安华·易卜拉欣表示，马来西亚政府将继续与缅甸进行磋商，以寻求友好解决长期存在的难民问题。

他说，这个问题已经持续了几十年，一直悬而未决，随着难民人数的增加，这个问题变得更加复杂，包括通过谈判确定他们可能返回家园的问题。

安瓦尔对缅甸总统接受邀请表示感谢，并表示将允许就此事进行讨论和谈判。

“所以我很高兴总统欣然接受了邀请，我们利用这个机会进行讨论、谈判，即使他们同意接回一些难民，我们当然也要确保他们得到保护，并获得相应的设施。

“但只是说不要把它们送回去……这里也有很多令人担忧的问题。”

“没有哪个国家能接受几十万，有些国家甚至能接受几百万。你必须要有谈判能力，”他补充道。

他表示，马来西亚政府的立场是保护难民的福祉和人权。

“但是仅仅因为我们采取了这项举措就谴责我们，我认为这是不公平的。”

“我们正在努力寻找解决此问题的友好方案。”

“所以我邀请他继续谈判，看看有哪些可能性……如何解决这个问题。”

安华进一步评论说，到目前为止，那些被派出去的人，都会把他们的人民带回来。

“我们还能做什么呢？至少我们费了心思。”

“就把他们推回去？不，说‘就把他们推回去’是不正确的。”

他说：“我们会先进行谈判。”

安华表示，邀请缅甸总统的决定非常重要。

“他们经历过。这套系统并不完美。”

“有人说我们的体系也不完美。很多国家也不完美，但仍然得到认可。”

“我一直认为这很虚伪，因为许多西方国家一直在谴责我们，但他们却能接受以色列政府的暴行。”

“至于这个问题，我们正在努力解决，”他说。

首相强调，马来西亚的条件非常严格。
