'There's no right time to do good': Singapore couple, kids hand out free drinks to runners

Syafa'at Rahman, 34, and Izyan Liana, 33, have been giving a real life lesson in kindness by handing out free isotonic drinks to runners and members of the public exercising at Woodlands Avenue 12 on Saturday (Sept 26).

The idea came after the couple saw an Instagram post from overseas showing somebody distributing drinks to long-distance runners as a gesture of support.

The couple told Berita Harian (BH) on Wednesday that they wanted their children not only to understand the value of doing good through advice, but also to experience for themselves what it means to help and interact with others.

Using their own money, the couple bought and prepared the drinks before setting up a small station with two of their three children.

An Instagram post about the initiative garnered more than 21,000 views, with their children seen holding a sign to attract people to the free drinks station.

Izyan, an educator at an Islamic education centre for children, said the experience allowed their children to see how a simple act such as handing someone a drink could bring joy and encouragement to others, with some runners even stopping to chat after running more than 20km.

'Wanted to make them happy'

The couple, who share an interest in running, said the activity also allowed their children to build confidence in approaching and interacting with strangers.

"As runners, we understand the importance of supporting runners because it can give them the encouragement to keep going," said Syafa’at, an assistant engineer.

"So, we chose this activity because we also wanted to make them feel happy," he added, saying he was grateful to contribute to the running community while involving his children.

The positive response encouraged the couple to continue the initiative through FuelGudClub, an Instagram platform they started.

Izyan said it will initially focus on distributing drinks to runners before potentially expanding to other forms of community giving.

"We also want to highlight the message to encourage the community to do good for one another," said Izyan.

"If you already have the intention, just do it. We don't have to wait for the right time to do good."
