PUTRAJAYA, Oct 1 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited the grave of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, in Putrajaya today, three days after her death at the age of 100.

Dr Mahathir arrived at Pusara Negara in Presint 20 at about 11.05am with family members and spent around 15 minutes at the grave, the New Straits Times (NST) reported.

The 101-year-old appeared emotional as he prayed beside the grave and scattered rose petals, according to the report.

He was understood to have stopped at the cemetery while returning home from the National Heart Institute (IJN), where he had undergone routine treatment.

His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, told NST that Dr Mahathir was tired after getting little sleep following his wife’s death on Monday.

Dr Siti Hasmah died at IJN at 9.20am on September 28 at the age of 100. She was laid to rest at Pusara Negara later that day following a state funeral, with Dr Mahathir, their children and other family members present.

Dr Mahathir was also seen shedding tears during the funeral as he accompanied his wife of 70 years to her final resting place.

The couple married in Kuala Lumpur on August 4, 1956, after meeting while studying medicine at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore.

Dr Siti Hasmah was a pioneering doctor who became the first woman appointed to the Maternal and Child Health Department and later the first woman to serve as a state maternal and child health officer. She was also known for her work in women’s health, family planning and community welfare.
