Singaporean charged with helping Indonesian woman's illegal stay, other immigration offences

A 30-year-old Singaporean man was on Thursday (Oct 1) charged with abetting an Indonesian woman to overstay in Singapore.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement after the case was mentioned in court that Sharizal Saidon had abetted a 30-year-old Indonesian woman, Alfira Mongan, to overstay in Singapore.

He was also charged with harbouring Alfira and obstructing an ICA officer in the execution of his duty.

ICA said Sharizal allegedly helped her remain in Singapore for nearly three years, after the expiry of her special pass on May 19, 2023.

Between May 20, 2023, and May 26 this year, Sharizal had purportedly allowed Alfira to stay at his Hougang Avenue 5 flat.

This was despite him knowing that she was an overstayer, ICA stated.

He is also said to have obstructed an ICA officer from doing his duty on May 26 this year by instructing Alfira to hide in a closet to evade detection.

An unidentified 20-year-old man was also made to delete messages from the Indonesian woman's phone.

Alfira was subsequently sentenced to 14 weeks' imprisonment and fined $2,000. She has since been deported and barred from re-entering Singapore.

ICA said that it takes a firm stance against any person who harbours immigration offenders or obstructs ICA officers in the execution of their duty.

Those found guilty of harbouring an overstayer and/or illegal immigrant may be sentenced to up to two years' imprisonment, and could also be fined up to S$6,000.

The offence of negligently failing to ascertain whether a person is an overstayer, or an illegal immigrant and harbouring such as person carries a penalty of up to 12 months' jail, a fine of up to $6,000, or both.

Any person found guilty of resisting or obstructing, actively or passively, an immigration officer in the execution of the immigration officer’s duty may be fined up to $4,000, jailed for up to 12 months, or both.
