A foreign tourist reportedly smashed a Phuket tuk-tuk driver over the head with a beer bottle after refusing to pay his fare. The drama began after a trip from Bangla Road when the cashless passenger left his phone as security. An hour later, the driver returned to a Kathu hotel for payment and found the man heavily intoxicated. The tourist reportedly grabbed back his phone, tore the driver’s shirt and struck him with the bottle before leaving without paying. Reports described him as appearing Middle Eastern, although others suggested he was European. Police had yet to confirm his identity, nationality or arrest. The attack is the latest in a string of violent confrontations involving foreign visitors and Phuket tuk-tuk drivers.

A foreign tourist reportedly attacked a Phuket tuk-tuk driver with a beer bottle after refusing to pay his fare. The dispute followed a journey from Patong’s Bangla Road to a hotel in Kathu district. Earlier, the tourist reportedly claimed he had no cash and surrendered his mobile telephone as security. Yet when the driver returned for payment, the arrangement reportedly descended into violence.

The incident was reported on Thursday, October 1. However, initial reports did not specify the exact date or time of the confrontation. The foreign man was described in original Thai reporting as appearing Middle Eastern or Arab. Separately, other reports suggested that he was European. Police had not confirmed his identity or nationality in the initial coverage.

According to the driver, the journey began when he collected the foreign man and a woman from Bangla Road. The driver then transported the pair from Patong to their hotel in the Kathu area. On arrival, the foreign tourist reportedly told him that he had no cash available. Consequently, the driver was left without payment for the journey.

Foreign tourist leaves his mobile phone as security before driver returns to Phuket hotel for payment

Instead, the foreign man offered his mobile telephone as security for the unpaid fare. He reportedly asked the driver to return approximately one hour later to collect his money. At that stage, the driver accepted the arrangement and left the hotel carrying the telephone. The foreigner remained at the hotel with his female companion.

About an hour later, the tuk-tuk driver returned as agreed. Initially, he approached the hotel reception desk and asked staff to contact the guest. Hotel employees then called the foreign man downstairs to meet him. According to the driver, the tourist appeared heavily intoxicated when he arrived.

Notably, the foreigner reportedly told the driver that he had been arguing with his girlfriend. The driver had returned solely to collect the outstanding tuk-tuk fare. Accordingly, he again asked the man to settle the bill for the earlier journey. The confrontation reportedly began to escalate at that point.

Rather than paying, the foreign man reportedly became angry and refused to hand over the money. Moreover, he took back the mobile telephone previously left with the driver as security. The driver was therefore left without the fare and without the security previously provided. An increasingly heated argument followed between the two men.

Phuket fare dispute turns violent as tourist reportedly grabs driver before striking him with beer bottle

Moments later, the verbal confrontation reportedly turned physical. According to the complaint, the foreign tourist grabbed the tuk-tuk driver during the argument. During the struggle, the driver’s shirt was reportedly torn. Then the confrontation took a more serious turn.

The tourist reportedly struck the tuk-tuk driver on the head with a beer bottle. Afterwards, the foreign man left without paying the outstanding fare, according to the driver. The available reports did not describe how the tourist departed. They also did not identify the woman’s whereabouts following the confrontation.

In response, the tuk-tuk driver went to the police and lodged a complaint over the reported attack. Initial reports provided no detailed account of his injuries. Likewise, they did not disclose whether he required hospital treatment. The value of the unpaid tuk-tuk fare was also not reported.

Meanwhile, there was no confirmed report that police had arrested the foreign man. The initial coverage also contained no confirmation that criminal charges had been filed. Furthermore, reports did not identify the police station handling the complaint. The suspect’s name was similarly absent from the available accounts.

Conflicting reports leave foreign tourist’s nationality unclear as police have yet to confirm identity

His nationality remained another unanswered point. The original Thai description said the man appeared Middle Eastern or Arab. In contrast, separate reports suggested he was European. Neither description established his nationality. No police confirmation resolving the conflicting accounts was available in the initial reporting.

Crucially, the published version of events came principally from the tuk-tuk driver. No statement from the foreign tourist appeared in the reports. His female companion was not quoted either. Therefore, the available account centres on the driver’s description of the journey and subsequent confrontation.

The sequence outlined by the driver began on Bangla Road, the centre of Patong’s nightlife district. He collected the foreign man and woman there before driving them to Kathu. Upon reaching the hotel, however, the passenger reportedly admitted he could not immediately pay. The mobile telephone was then handed over as temporary security.

As part of that arrangement, the driver agreed to leave and return one hour later. The foreign man reportedly remained behind and promised to settle the outstanding fare. Subsequently, the driver came back expecting payment. Instead, he encountered a passenger he described as heavily intoxicated.

Driver says tourist reclaimed his telephone before the Phuket hotel fare dispute turned physical

At the same time, the foreign man reportedly disclosed that he had argued with his girlfriend. Nevertheless, the driver again requested his money. The tourist then reportedly reclaimed his telephone without settling the debt. From there, the argument quickly became a physical confrontation.

According to the complaint, the tourist first grabbed the driver. Next, the driver’s shirt was torn during the struggle. Finally, the foreign man reportedly used a beer bottle to strike him on the head. He then left without paying the fare.

The reported attack adds another case to a series of Phuket disputes involving foreign visitors and tuk-tuk drivers. In February, three foreign men reportedly attacked a tuk-tuk driver outside Jungceylon shopping centre in Patong. That confrontation followed a parking dispute, according to reports.

On another front, an Israeli family became involved in a separate confrontation with a Phuket tuk-tuk driver in August. The driver accused family members of threatening and attempting to attack him. That dispute reportedly followed his refusal to join a trip involving his Australian passengers.

Earlier Phuket tuk-tuk fare dispute in July ended with foreign tourist arrested, fined and deported

More significantly, another unpaid-fare confrontation was reported in Phuket during July. That case also involved a foreign passenger and a Thai tuk-tuk driver. The dispute occurred outside a hotel on Soi Na Nai. Once again, reports said the confrontation became violent after a fare disagreement.

In the July case, the foreign man reportedly refused to pay his tuk-tuk fare. He was then accused of assaulting the Thai driver outside the hotel. Subsequently, the tourist was arrested, according to reports at the time. He was later fined and deported from Thailand.

By comparison, the latest Kathu case remained at an earlier stage following Thursday’s reports. The driver had filed his police complaint and supplied his account of events. However, there was no confirmed arrest in the initial coverage. Nor was there confirmation that the foreign man had been charged.

Additionally, reports did not say whether investigators had interviewed hotel employees who called the tourist downstairs. No information was provided about possible security camera footage from the premises. Similarly, there was no indication whether other guests witnessed the confrontation. The reports also did not disclose whether police had interviewed the tourist’s female companion.

Key details remain unknown as police complaint recounts unpaid fare and reported beer bottle attack

For now, several basic details remain absent from the initial reports. The precise time of the incident was not disclosed. Neither was the amount of the disputed fare. The driver’s exact injuries were not detailed, while the foreign man remained publicly unidentified.

Nevertheless, the driver provided a clear sequence in his complaint. He said the foreigner could not pay after arriving at the hotel. As security, the tourist handed over his mobile telephone and requested another hour. The driver agreed and later returned expecting payment.

Instead, according to his account, the foreign man appeared heavily intoxicated and refused to settle the fare. He then reclaimed the telephone previously handed over as security. Seconds later, the dispute reportedly turned physical.

The driver says the tourist grabbed him and tore his shirt during the confrontation. Finally, he says the foreign man struck him on the head with a beer bottle. The tourist then reportedly left without paying. Afterwards, the tuk-tuk driver went to the police and filed his complaint.
