Former NFL star Tony Romo will not be returning to CBS Sports after his arrest for drunk driving earlier this summer, t he network said in a statement.

CBS Sports and Romo “mutually agreed to part ways,” according to the statement, after nine years of the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback featuring as one of CBS’ top voices during NFL games.

“We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward,” the statement read.

Romo was arrested in July on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin, a moment that stained his image as the aw-shucks, clean-cut football star who has become one of the best on-air personalities in the game. He pleaded no contest last month to a civil offense for operating while intoxicated.

Tony Romo was brutally honest about his arrest and revealed a painful truth about life after football

In his own statement, Romo said he was proud of his time at CBS Sports but needed time to get himself right after the brush with the law.

“I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life–with a desire to win and be the best that I can be,” Romo said in the statement. “I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”

Bodycam footage released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office shows former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo being arrested on suspicion of operating while under the influence. CNN has reached out to Romo’s lawyers for comment.

After his plea of no contest, Romo said he had begun relying on alcohol to help deal with the constant pain left over from his playing career.

He said at the time that he planned to use the lessons from football to help move on from the arrest and figure out the next steps in his life.

“The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant. It has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully—to the Lord, to myself, to my family, and now to the public,” he wrote.

“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community, including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.”
