Kuala Lumpur is set to experience a bustling sporting weekend with the return of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia, alongside the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2026, and the concluding stages of Le Tour de Langkawi 2026.
The overlapping of these major events on October 3 and 4 is anticipated to cause significant traffic congestion, prompting police to implement traffic diversions and road closures, especially around major venues.
Authorities recommend using public transport and shuttle services to navigate the city during this period.
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 — This weekend could feel like a long one for Malaysians in the capital — not because of a string of public holidays, but the sheer number of events expected to clog up roads across the Klang Valley.
The days ahead will feature a flurry of sporting, cultural and musical events, with several taking place simultaneously.
Malay Mail breaks down some of the biggest events taking place in and around KL this weekend:
Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix
The biggest crowd-puller is the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which got under way at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) yesterday and continues until tomorrow (October 4).
Formula 1 is returning to Malaysia for the first time in nine years, with Sepang stepping in to host the race after the Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled earlier this season amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Some 22 drivers will take to the Sepang circuit, including 12 who will be competing there for the first time, according to Reuters.
Daily crowds are expected to surpass 100,000, with Sunday’s finale tipped to draw a record number of spectators.
Traffic diversions will be taking place on several roads leading to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from 8am to 11pm daily until October 4.
Some 822 police officers will be stationed at eight checkpoints around KLIA and the SIC including Bulatan Masjid, Jalan KLIA S8 and Persiaran Teknologi 1 & 2.
KLIA has also advised race-goers to use the Express Rail Link (ERL) or e-hailing services to arrive at the airport.
Free shuttle bus services will be provided for the F1 spectators from KLIA Terminal 2, KLIA Long Term Car Park and Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA.
Another major sporting event affecting the Klang Valley is the Le Tour de Langkawi 2026, which is now in its final leg.
The eight-stage race will culminate when riders race from Muar to the finish line in front of the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Sunday.
During that last stretch, a massive traffic jam is expected to occur at Putrajaya, MEX Highway and the ELITE Highway on Sunday afternoon.
Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2026
The annual Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2026 will also get under way with the 5km and 10km races today, while the full and half marathons will take place on Sunday.
A series of staggered road closures began at 8pm last night, starting with Jalan Raja and Dataran Merdeka.
Other affected roads include Jalan Raja, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Kinabalu and Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin.
Three key highways — the AKLEH, MRR2 and the northbound DUKE Highway towards Jalan Duta — will also be shut from 11pm today until 11am on Sunday.
KL Tower International Base Jump
Some of the world’s top professional athletes will be leaping off the iconic KL Tower Sky Deck this weekend.
The annual event, organised by Base Malaya Ventures, began yesterday and will run until Sunday.
The day jumps will take place between 8.30am and 6pm but the highlight will be the night jumps starting from 8pm to 10pm, which will feature illuminated canopy stunts.
Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia (Serdang)
Just outside the capital, the Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia is set to draw motoring enthusiasts keen to explore Japan’s custom car culture at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).
The three-day event, which began yesterday, will be open to the public from 10am to 10pm, with ticket prices starting from RM48.
It will also feature actor Sung Kang, best known for playing Han in the Fast & Furious franchise, who is set to make an appearance at the event.
Citrawarna Speed Festival (Putrajaya)
Alongside the Le Tour de Langkawi grand finale, culture and colour will also take centre stage in Putrajaya as the 12-day Citrawarna Speed Festival comes to a close on Sunday.
The F1 fever from nearby SIC will also spill over, with automotive exhibitions and racing simulator sessions accompanying cultural shows at the 101 City Mall Putrajaya, KLIA Terminal 1 and the Sama-Sama Hotel.
Today, some 1,500 dancers and cultural performers in traditional costumes will take part in a massive parade from the Le Meridien Hotel to Moxy Hotels at IOI City Mall.
The festival is slated to end on a high note on Sunday with a mega-scale Lamborghini Activation that brings together 100 supercars at the IOI City Mall.
AllStar Legends Talk and Match
Football fans can also catch a star-studded gathering of former Premier League and international footballers at Mitec on Saturday, with tickets reportedly nearing a sell-out.
The AllStar Legends event, organised by AllStar Sports in collaboration with World Football Legends, features Premier League icons including Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, John Arne Riise and Eidur Gudjohnsen, alongside international stars such as Alessandro Del Piero, Jaap Stam and Fernando Morientes.
The event was moved indoors to Mited amid concerns over worsening haze and unpredictable weather.
Fans can catch the AllStar Legends Talk: The Winning Mindset at 4pm, followed by the AllStar Legends Match at 8.45pm, both at Hall 9, Level 3.
Henry Lau, Faizal Tahir and Anoushka Shankar headline weekend concerts
Along with race-goers and motoring enthusiasts, music fans also have a promising weekend lined up for them.
Tonight, Canadian singer-songwriter Henry Lau will perform at Idea Live Arena in PJ as part of the Asia leg of his Enjoy the Show world tour.
And at the nearby Inspire Live Arena inside the IOI Mall Damansara, the Idol Radio Live in Kuala Lumpur concert promises a nostalgic night for K-pop fans.
Malaysian singer-songwriter Faizal Tahir will also take the stage at Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil for his Suara Rakyat concert, his first solo concert in three years.
On Sunday, British-American sitar player Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, will perform at Plenary Hall, KLCC, following a 14-year absence from Malaysia.
Need some comic relief? Consider this:
If all you need this weekend is a few laughs, Mic Drop Asia Tour 2026 at Mega Star Arena could be just the ticket for Saturday night.
Organised by LOL Asia, the event will feature five prominent stand-up comedians from across Asia, including Singapore’s Kumar, Malaysia’s Prakash Daniel, as well as He Huang, Harry Jun and Saaniya Abbas.
Whether you seek an adrenaline rush, a nostalgic night or simply some laughs, this weekend offers plenty of choices across the Klang Valley.
