BEIJING: For Zhang Xintong, a resident of Harbin, capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, this National Day holiday was supposed to be a quiet break at home. But a newly opened high-speed rail line gave her the idea of a trip to Yichun, where she pictured herself in endless green forests and fresh air.

The new line, China's northernmost high-speed railway, links Harbin with Yichun, a popular summer retreat and forest tourism destination in the same province, along a 318-kilometre route. It officially entered service on Sept. 28, cutting railway travel time between the two cities from about seven hours to roughly two hours.
