One of Thailand’s best-known crime fighters was behind bars Saturday night after cyber police turned the tables on a relentless police corruption critic. Atchariya Ruangrattanapong was suddenly arrested in an online boxing gambling probe involving over ฿1 billion in turnover. Police are examining 212 transactions worth more than ฿40 million as he faces fraud, money laundering and gambling charges. Atchariya denies everything. His arrest follows years of battles over Tangmo’s death, Chinese scam suspects, immigration corruption and claimed forged arrest warrants. Now he remains in custody until Monday, when the Crime Victims Assistance Club founder appears before the Criminal Court as the accused.

Crime fighter and anti-corruption campaigner Atchariya Ruangrattanapong remained behind bars on Saturday night after his sudden arrest hours earlier. Cyber police are holding the nationally known campaigner at Thung Song Hong Police Station. He is due before the Criminal Court on Monday, October 5. There, investigators are expected to seek his formal remand in a major online boxing gambling case.
The arrest came shortly after noon on Saturday near the Om Noi boxing stadium. Officers moved under Criminal Court warrant No. 5726/2569, issued just one day earlier. Atchariya now faces accusations including public fraud, money laundering and illegal electronic betting on boxing. In addition, he faces charges under the Computer Crime Act.
Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau officers questioned Atchariya for more than four hours. Afterwards, they transferred him to Thung Song Hong Police Station at about 7.30 pm. However, Atchariya denied every charge. He insists the financial transactions cited against him have legitimate explanations.
Cyber police trace ฿1 billion gambling network before financial trail reaches Atchariya and his club
The dramatic arrest stems from a much wider online Muay Thai gambling investigation. In March, cyber police moved against the “Muay Pak Yok Variety” betting operation. Officers raided six Bangkok properties during the crackdown. Four were inside a housing estate on Soi Nawamin 24. Separately, another two properties were targeted on Soi Nawamin 42 in Bueng Kum district.
Police arrested six suspects during those raids. At the same time, officers seized 245 mobile phones and assets exceeding ฿6.3 million. Investigators then began following the operation’s money trail. According to police, the network generated financial turnover exceeding ฿1 billion.
From there, the investigation widened sharply. Police examined administrators and others whose transactions appeared within the network’s financial records. Eventually, the trail reached Atchariya and accounts associated with his Crime Victims Assistance Club.
Investigators say they identified 212 transactions totalling more than ฿40 million. Police claim those transactions connect Atchariya with accounts uncovered during the boxing gambling investigation. Crucially, however, the figure remains a police claim. No court has ruled that the ฿40 million represented criminal proceeds.
Police scrutinise ฿359 million account turnover as Atchariya rejects links to illegal boxing gambling
Investigators then dug deeper into Atchariya’s finances. According to police, his personal account recorded 1,196 transactions involving more than ฿191 million. Meanwhile, the Crime Victims Assistance Club account showed considerably more individual movements. Police say it recorded 5,140 transactions with turnover exceeding ฿168 million.
Together, those turnover figures exceed ฿359 million. Yet they represent overall account movements identified by investigators. They do not establish that ฿359 million was gambling money. Nor do they establish that the entire amount represented criminal proceeds.
Instead, investigators are concentrating particularly on those 212 transactions exceeding ฿40 million. Police claim tens of millions of baht were connected with online boxing betting websites. Atchariya rejects that interpretation outright. He says the transactions can be explained and denies involvement in illegal gambling.
Immediately after his arrest, officers took Atchariya to Krathum Baen Police Station. There, police formally recorded the arrest. Later, officers moved him to cyber police headquarters at the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road.
Atchariya spoke briefly as police escorted him inside. He immediately rejected any link between his organisation’s finances and illegal gambling. Notably, he stressed that the club account was separate from his personal bank account. He also said he could explain the transactions now under investigation.
Atchariya questions timing of arrest as police defend probe and fraud dispute focuses on ฿414,000
Reporters then asked whether somebody was trying to frame him. Atchariya stopped short of naming anyone. Instead, he told people to consider the circumstances themselves. He also highlighted the timing. The Criminal Court issued the warrant on Friday, and officers arrested him the next day.
In response, police rejected suggestions that the investigation amounted to harassment. Pol Maj Gen Siriwat Deepo addressed the case on Saturday. He is Deputy Commissioner of the Police Inspectorate and a deputy Royal Thai Police spokesman.
Pol Maj Gen Siriwat said the case flowed from the March gambling crackdown. Subsequently, financial investigators identified approximately ฿40 million across 212 transactions, according to police. Investigators claim those transactions were connected with online betting websites.
On another front, police say people who previously transferred money to Atchariya’s organisation have provided information. Investigators claim some believed their money would be used to assist crime victims. Atchariya denies defrauding anyone.
A particularly sharp dispute concerns ฿414,000 highlighted within the fraud accusations. Atchariya says the money has clear and identifiable origins. According to his account, ฿12,000 involved two separate payments. Of that, ฿10,000 was connected with a kathin religious ceremony. Another ฿2,000 was given directly to him.
Atchariya says ฿400,000 was legitimate payment as his long career pursuing crime cases comes into focus
More significantly, another ฿400,000 concerned investigative work involving suspected nominee companies in Phuket. Atchariya says ฿1 million had been agreed for the work. Therefore, he maintains the ฿400,000 represented legitimate part-payment. He rejects the claim that it resulted from fraud.
As part of his defence, Atchariya also rejects accusations involving deceptive electronic communications. Moreover, he says his organisation’s bank account had operated for 12 years. He maintains the club’s finances remained separate from his own.
Police are continuing to examine the larger money flows. Investigators also say Atchariya had sole withdrawal authority over the Crime Victims Assistance Club account. Nevertheless, their evidence has yet to be tested before the court.
The arrest has attracted attention because Atchariya is no ordinary suspect. He is among Thailand’s most recognisable independent crime campaigners. For years, he has pursued cases involving police, officials, criminal suspects and disputed investigations. Consequently, he became a familiar face across Thai television and news media.
His campaigning style is direct and confrontational. Atchariya collects documents, financial records and witness information. Then, he takes his material to police, prosecutors, government agencies and parliamentary committees. Frequently, he also makes his accusations publicly.
Atchariya’s police battle began after a construction dispute led him from engineering into crime fighting
That approach repeatedly put him into conflict with the Royal Thai Police. Over the years, he accused serving officers of corruption, misconduct and interference in investigations. Conversely, his campaigns also produced lawsuits and criminal cases against him.
His route into crime fighting began far from police headquarters. Atchariya was born in Surat Thani and studied civil engineering at Southeast Asia University. Afterwards, he entered the construction industry and operated a business.
Then his own experience with the criminal justice system changed his direction. According to Atchariya, he was cheated of approximately ฿2 million through his construction business. Yet his attempt to recover the money turned against him.
Atchariya says the opposing party had connections with an investigating police officer. Subsequently, he found himself facing criminal proceedings. The case dragged on for several years before Atchariya was eventually acquitted.
By then, his career had changed course. He closed his construction business and began studying law. In turn, his own experiences inside the justice system became the foundation for his campaigning.
Crime Victims Assistance Club grows as Atchariya targets police corruption and claims monthly payments
In 2009, Atchariya established the Crime Victims Assistance Club. The organisation began taking complaints from people claiming their criminal cases were mishandled or ignored. By 2017, Atchariya said the club had already handled thousands of complaints.
However, the organisation did not operate like a conventional charity. Instead, Atchariya developed an aggressive investigative model. He gathered documents, banking information and testimony. From there, he regularly took the evidence directly to state agencies.
His complaints reached national police headquarters and the Department of Special Investigation. Likewise, they reached anti-corruption agencies, prosecutors and parliamentary committees. Alongside this, Atchariya regularly used news conferences to push his allegations into public view.
Suspected police corruption became one of his most persistent targets. In August 2024, Atchariya submitted financial information to anti-corruption police. His complaint targeted officers attached to the Economic Crime Suppression Division.
Atchariya accused officers of collecting monthly payments from import businesses. He claimed more than 50 businesses were affected. Furthermore, he put the payments at more than ฿300 million. Those claims were submitted for investigation and were not court findings.
Tangmo case and Chinese detainee claims put Atchariya into confrontations with police investigators
Another major battle centred on television actress Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong. Tangmo fell from a speedboat into the Chao Phraya River in February 2022. Soon afterwards, Atchariya became an outspoken critic of aspects of the police investigation.
In April 2022, he formally complained about Provincial Police Region 1 and Nonthaburi investigators. Later, he supplied additional information to the Department of Special Investigation. He also sought to have Tangmo’s death accepted as a special case.
Far from disappearing, his involvement continued for years. On April 24 this year, Atchariya again delivered material concerning Tangmo’s death to the DSI. Tangmo’s mother and campaigner Panthep Puapongpan joined him.
Together, they presented more than 1,000 pages of material. At that stage, the DSI was preparing information for the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
Meanwhile, Atchariya’s clashes with police moved onto another explosive front. His most serious recent accusations concerned Chinese suspects and Immigration Police. In January, he produced documents concerning Chinese detainees linked with scam operations.
Atchariya alleged misconduct involving police officers, lawyers and detainees. Specifically, he claimed false evidence was produced to secure Chinese nationals’ release from immigration custody. He further claimed some were returned to Chinese criminal interests.
Atchariya takes detention claims to police chief before arrest in ฿2.5 million extortion investigation
On March 5, Atchariya took the matter directly to national police chief Pol Gen Kittirat Phanphet. He personally delivered additional evidence concerning the Suan Phlu Immigration detention centre.
Atchariya claimed Chinese detainees paid monthly bribes for privileged treatment. Moreover, he alleged special detention arrangements could cost approximately ฿200,000. He said his evidence included recordings and video supplied by a former Chinese detainee.
Then the case took a dramatic turn.
On April 21, police arrested Atchariya himself. Investigators accused him and others of attempting to extort ฿2.5 million from an Immigration Police colonel. Significantly, the prosecution arose from the same detention centre controversy.
Police accused Atchariya of threatening to make damaging public disclosures unless money was paid. He denied the accusation. In response, Atchariya maintained that the prosecution followed his attempts to expose misconduct.
The Criminal Court subsequently granted him bail of ฿400,000. However, the court imposed conditions. These included restrictions against interfering with witnesses or evidence.
Second arrest follows claims of forged warrants and Chinese scam links as Atchariya opens another DSI case
Saturday’s operation is therefore Atchariya’s second major arrest during 2026. Even so, his campaigns against police continued throughout the intervening months. Indeed, he launched another extraordinary accusation less than three weeks before Saturday’s arrest.
On September 17, Atchariya took material to Parliament alleging 24 court arrest warrants had been forged. His allegations did not stop there. He claimed more than 50 investigators across Bangkok police divisions were involved.
Atchariya alleged that fictitious complainants or fabricated evidence were used to secure warrants. Furthermore, he claimed more than 200 arrest warrants involving Chinese nationals were obtained.
He also alleged more than 300 Chinese nationals were eventually moved towards Thailand’s border areas. According to Atchariya, some subsequently returned to scam operations. A parliamentary committee accepted his material for examination.
However, those accusations remain claims under examination. They have not been established as judicial findings.
Just nine days earlier, Atchariya had opened another front. On September 8, he took a suspected electronic-waste case to the Department of Special Investigation.
That complaint involved 16 companies and 126 containers imported from the United States through Laem Chabang. Atchariya alleged Chinese beneficial ownership stood behind some companies. Additionally, he claimed Thai nominees were used to conceal that ownership.
Atchariya’s legal troubles mount with defamation case and a prison sentence for contempt of court
His complaint also questioned possible official involvement in allowing the shipments through. Again, those accusations were submitted for investigation. They were not established findings.
Atchariya’s hard-charging tactics have also repeatedly landed him in legal trouble. Over the years, he has faced proceedings involving police officers, lawyers and other public figures.
In August 2023, for example, the Criminal Court accepted a case involving Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thammasuthee. The senior Metropolitan Police investigator brought proceedings involving accusations of false reporting and defamation.
Another serious setback followed in February 2025. The Criminal Court sentenced Atchariya to two months’ imprisonment without suspension for contempt of court.
The case concerned his distribution of a judgment summary before its release was authorised. The court noted Atchariya was not a legal professional. Nonetheless, judges found his extensive court experience meant he understood the procedures.
Against that background, the latest prosecution adds another chapter to his long confrontation with Thailand’s criminal justice system. For more than a decade, Atchariya has taken accusations against police and officials into public view.
Police focus on ฿40 million in transactions as Atchariya disputes gambling links and separate fraud claims
At the same time, his methods have repeatedly brought proceedings against him. Saturday’s gambling-related arrest, however, is separate from his April extortion prosecution.
This case began with the March crackdown on the online Muay Thai betting network. Police say their case is driven by the financial trail. Atchariya says legitimate transactions are being presented as criminal money.
At the heart of that dispute are striking figures. Police cite more than ฿191 million in turnover through Atchariya’s personal account. Separately, investigators cite more than ฿168 million through the Crime Victims Assistance Club account.
Combined, those figures exceed ฿359 million. Yet they represent total account turnover cited by police. They are not findings that ฿359 million represented gambling proceeds.
Instead, investigators have singled out 212 transactions worth more than ฿40 million. Police claim those transfers provide the financial connection to online boxing gambling.
Atchariya rejects the claim. He insists he can explain the money.
Meanwhile, police are pursuing separate public fraud accusations. Atchariya denies those as well. He says the disputed ฿414,000 involved identifiable payments and legitimate work.
Atchariya points to cases pursued against police as latest financial investigation heads to Criminal Court
Beyond the financial battle, Atchariya has pointed directly to the cases he pursued before his arrest. They include the Tangmo investigation and his accusations concerning Chinese detainees.
He also cited the claimed forged arrest warrants. Additionally, he pointed to his recent electronic-waste investigation.
Atchariya claims powerful figures within the Royal Thai Police want him imprisoned. No independent evidence has established that claim. Police maintain their case emerged from financial evidence uncovered during the gambling investigation.
Now that evidence is heading towards court.
For the moment, Atchariya remains inside Thung Song Hong Police Station. On Monday, October 5, officers are expected to take him before the Criminal Court at Ratchadaphisek.
He will arrive after more than a decade spent pursuing contentious criminal cases. Along the way, he repeatedly accused police officers and other officials of serious misconduct.
He also repeatedly found himself facing legal action.
Now, cyber police accuse him of fraud, money laundering and illegal online boxing gambling. They point to 212 transactions exceeding ฿40 million as a central part of their case.
Atchariya denies everything.
On Monday, one of Thailand’s best-known crime fighters will walk into the Criminal Court from police custody.
This time, he will be the accused.
