At the National Archives of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, director-­general Zaidin Mohd Noor recalls a story involving a ­village preparing to mark what was believed to be its 100th anniversary.

“It was a significant milestone so some officials from the village had announced to the media that a major celebration will take place,” says Zaidin.
