'I usually wear gloves': Woodlands food stall worker caught spreading butter with fingers apologises

It was a rush to serve customers that led to a food stall worker in Woodlands using her hands to spread butter on bread, Shin Min Daily News reported on Saturday (Oct 3).

Speaking with a reporter from the Chinese language publication, the worker in question nervously apologised for her actions.

She explained: "I was in a hurry, so I used my hands instead — I usually wear gloves. I'm really sorry."

Her response comes amid public outcry after a video circulated online showing her using her index finger to scoop up butter before pressing it down into the bread, wiggling around to spread it.

She then folds the bread in half and places the slice in a plastic bag before doing the same for a few more slices.

While the worker has offered her apology, she also clarified with Shin Min that she is not qualified to answer questions on behalf of the shop and told the reporter to contact their manager.

The manager then told the Chinese daily publication that the matter had taken place several days ago and authorities from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) had already visited.

The agency did not share any comments with the shop's management, the manager allegedly claimed.

SFA had previously told AsiaOne they are looking into the matter and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained.

As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, they may engage the feedback provider for more details.

"Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices. Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained," they added.

Roach in drink, raw chicken

The shop in question, TuanTuan.PuanPuan, has received negative reviews among some members of the public in the past, according to their Google reviews.

At 2.7 stars, the shop has received 149 reviews on Google, with many citing expensive food or rude staff.

Conversely, some also praised the stall's chicken rice for its taste, offering five-star ratings for their dish.

However, a user shared in a post a year ago that she had purportedly found a cockroach in her coffee purchased from the shop.

"Thought it was the coffee netting or plastic," the user wrote. "Turns out it was a roach and I can't believe it was in my mouth."
