Bukit Gombak tenant says landlord told him to shower less, pay extra to cook: 'The rules are getting crazy'

This tenant is already showering once a day — but it seems his landlord allegedly wants him to shower less.

A tenant in Bukit Gombak has revealed that he was told to shower less and pay extra if he wants to cook, according to a video he uploaded to TikTok on Sunday (Oct 4).

In the video, the tenant, an international student who declined to share his name, questioned: "Are all Singaporean landlords this strict, or is it only mine?"

He shared that he has been living in the HDB flat for about two months and that the "rules are getting crazy".

According to the tenant, who lives with two others, they were collectively told not to come home late, not to eat in the kitchen and not to put their belongings in the kitchen shelves.

While he took these restrictions in stride, it was the alleged restriction on cooking that he felt was the most significant.

The tenant explained that the agreement he signed with the landlord indicated that he is allowed to cook.

"Even on the day of signing the agreement, the landlord said to us that we can cook as much as we want," he added.

"Now the landlord told us we need to pay $60 extra for the gas, and I'm kind of shocked."

'Pay extra, or leave'

Despite his reservations, the tenant agreed to pay — only to be hit with another restriction: they would only be able to cook twice or thrice a week.

The tenant then purportedly confronted his landlord with the agreement and was told to "pay extra for the gas or just leave", he said in his TikTok.

"It's not only the cooking," the tenant stated. "The landlord is telling us to shower less, which is absolutely crazy and we're (already) only doing it once a day."

Afraid of losing their deposit, the tenant shared that he is at a loss.

He questioned his audience: "Honestly I don't know if it is normal in Singapore or if we just had bad luck choosing the apartment… what would you do in my situation?"

AsiaOne has contacted the tenant for more information.

'Smallest apartment in Singapore'

In August, the same tenant had uploaded a video introducing his accommodation to his audience, calling it the "smallest apartment in Singapore".

His flat appeared no different from other HDB flats in Singapore, with his likely being a four-room one.

However, his accommodation was just one room shared with two others — in the video, his couch-sized bed can be seen perpendicularly pressed against the foot of a similarly small bunk bed.

The bunk bed is shared by his two roommates, he said.

Despite the cramped conditions, the tenant seemed to view his living space positively, highlighting its proximity to an MRT station nearby and the greenery visible from the room.

"So how much do I actually pay for this?" He asked. "Whole place is $1,500, and for three students, it's $500 per pax."

Many netizens were quick to point out that his conditions were far from ideal for the price he had to pay, with some calling it a scam.

"If it's $1,500 for a shared room, you've been scammed!" Exclaimed one user.

Another user said: "Views of the green and trains are everywhere! Sharing a small room for three at $1,500 is expensive."
