• Attorneys for Christa Pike, the Tennessee inmate who survived an execution attempt , are seeking a court order to ensure the preservation of evidence in her botched execution . They are expected to appear in court later today.

• Pike is conscious and speaking one week after the failed execution, the attorneys say. After surviving two ostensibly lethal doses of pentobarbital, she was transferred to a hospital and received lifesaving medical care.

• Pike, who was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, was to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years.

No indication whether state will seek death penality for Pike again

The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office hasn’t indicated whether it will seek to put Chrisa Pike to death again, Stephen Ferrell, one of Pike’s attorneys, told CNN on Sunday.

Pike’s lawyers have called on Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

After Pike’s failed execution last week, Lee suspended executions for the rest of the year and announced a third party would do “a thorough and comprehensive” review of her case.

Republican US Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who is running to replace Lee as governor in January, called to bring back the electric chair and “deliver justice for these victims swiftly.”

Christa Pike is conscious and speaking, her attorneys say

Christa Pike, who survived Tennessee’s attempt to put her to death via lethal injection last week, is conscious and speaking , according to a statement from her attorneys.

“Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” the statement said.

After surviving two ostensibly lethal doses of pentobarbital during her planned execution, Pike was transferred to a hospital where she was initially unconscious and placed on a ventilator, receiving lifesaving medical care.

Her attorneys said they are grateful to the first responders and medical team who “treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her.”

“Christa is a survivor and will take recovering one day at a time,” her attorneys added.
