30 people evacuated after fire breaks out in Kovan home

SINGAPORE – Thirty people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a two-storey house in Kovan, partially damaging another house and sending thick plumes of smoke in the air.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), who were alerted to the fire at Simon Lane in the Kovan area at about 3pm, said firefighters used three water jets to surround, contain and extinguish the fire.

A person from the affected unit evacuated before SCDF’s arrival. As a precaution, the police and SCDF evacuated about 30 people from neighbouring units.

A person from one of the neighbouring homes was assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital, said SCDF.

Damping down of the affected area to prevent any potential rekindling of the fire is ongoing, with an adjacent house partially damaged by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

When The Straits Times arrived at the scene at about 4.30pm, clouds of smoke were seen billowing from the house, shrouding the surrounding area.

At least two SCDF vehicles, including a Light Fire Attack Vehicle, commonly known as the Red Rhino, and a police car were at the scene.

Vincent Lim, 74, chairman of Phoh Kiu Siang T’ng temple, which is just a few doors down from the house, told ST he was the first person to notice the fire at around 3pm.

He said he immediately called SCDF before rushing to the house to help its residents, an elderly couple in their 80s.

An elderly man was later seen being wheeled away from the site by an SCDF officer, before getting into a waiting car.

In February, s ix people were rescued from a blaze that broke out in a two-storey condominium unit in Kovan. Three of the people rescued were taken to hospital, with one sufferin g burns .

The total number of fires in Singapore increased by 3 per cent from 1,990 cases in 2024 to 2,050 cases in 2025, based on SCDF’s annual statistics report. Of these, 1,051 involved fires at residential buildings.

Unattended cooking and electrical fires – including faults in electrical wiring or overloaded sockets – remained the top two causes of home fires.

新加坡民防部队（SCDF）于下午3点左右接到高文地区西蒙巷发生火灾的警报，称消防员使用了三支水枪包围、控制并扑灭了火灾。

受影响单位的一名居民在新加坡民防部队到达前已撤离。作为预防措施，警方和民防部队从邻近单位疏散了约30人。

新加坡民防部队表示，一名来自邻近房屋的居民因吸入浓烟接受了评估，并被送往新加坡中央医院。

为防止火势复燃，目前正在对受灾区域进行扑灭工作，邻近的一栋房屋也受到火灾的部分损坏。

火灾原因正在调查中。

《海峡时报》记者于下午 4 点 30 分左右到达现场时，只见浓烟从房屋中滚滚而出，笼罩了周围地区。

现场至少有两辆新加坡民防部队车辆，包括一辆轻型消防攻击车（俗称“红犀牛”）和一辆警车。

74 岁的 Vincent Lim 是 Phoh Kiu Siang T'ng 庙的主席，该庙距离这栋房子只有几户之隔。他告诉《海峡时报》，他是下午 3 点左右第一个注意到火灾的人。

根据新加坡民防部队（SCDF）的年度统计报告，新加坡的火灾总数从2024年的1990起增加到2025年的2050起，增幅为3%。其中，1051起火灾涉及住宅楼宇。

无人照看的烹饪和电气火灾（包括电线故障或插座过载）仍然是家庭火灾的两大主要原因。
