Sarawak haze crisis prompts nationwide plea to stop open burning, shield schools and businesses

Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab, chairman of the Special Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transportation, and Communication, has called for an immediate halt to open burning activities in Sarawak to prevent the haze situation from worsening, following the declaration of an emergency in the Serian Division by Malaysia's King.

He emphasized the importance of precautions, urging people to wear masks outdoors and avoid burning rubbish or clearing forests by fire.

Additionally, he officiated the Tanjung Manis Parliamentary Class B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme, aimed at helping low-income groups obtain affordable driving licences to improve their economic prospects.

SARIKEI, Sept 5 — All parties are urged to refrain from open burning activities to prevent the haze situation in Sarawak from worsening and posing risks to public health and daily activities.

Special Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transportation and Communication chairman Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab said all open burning activities, including the disposal of rubbish and clearing of forests through fire, must cease until the situation returns to normal.

He said precautionary measures must be stepped up following the declaration of an emergency in the Serian Division by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, yesterday.

“I urge everyone to stop open burning for now. Please do not burn rubbish or clear forests by fire. Put these activities on hold until the haze situation improves.

“We do not want this situation to continue affecting daily business, travel and other activities. Schools and many premises have had to close, and this is certainly inconvenient for everyone,” he told reporters after officiating the Tanjung Manis Parliamentary Class B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme here today.

Yusuf, who is also the Tanjung Manis Member of Parliament, reminded the public to wear face masks when outdoors to minimise health risks caused by the haze.

The programme, organised by the Tanjung Manis Parliamentary Service Centre in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarikei Branch, attracted 1,014 candidates from across the parliamentary constituency.

Yusuf said the programme reflected the Government’s concern in helping low-income groups, particularly those in rural areas, to obtain valid driving licences at a lower cost.

“With a valid driving licence, the B40 group can use motorcycles to earn a living and increase their income. This will help improve their socio-economic status,” he said. — Bernama

“我们不希望这种情况继续影响日常商业、旅行和其他活动。学校和许多场所不得不关闭，这无疑给每个人都带来了不便，”他今天在丹绒马尼国会B2级驾驶执照援助计划启动仪式后告诉记者。

身为丹绒马尼国会议员的优素福提醒公众，在户外时要佩戴口罩，以最大程度地降低雾霾造成的健康风险。

该计划由丹绒马尼国会服务中心与陆路交通局沙里基分局联合举办，吸引了来自整个国会选区的 1014 名候选人。

优素福表示，该计划体现了政府的关切，即帮助低收入群体，特别是农村地区的低收入群体，以较低的成本获得有效的驾驶执照。

他说：“只要持有有效的驾驶执照，B40群体就可以骑摩托车谋生，增加收入。这将有助于改善他们的社会经济地位。”——马新社
