Singapore's air quality remained in the unhealthy range throughout Thursday (Oct 8) afternoon, with the one-hour PM2.5 hitting the mid-elevated range in central, southern and western Singapore.

At 7pm, 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) ranged from 98 in the northern region to 139 in western Singapore.

The next highest readings were recorded in the central (137) and eastern (108) regions, while northern Singapore (100) returned to the moderate range at 7pm.

Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 remains is in the elevated band in central (113), southern (80), western (77) and eastern (70) Singapore, with only the northern region (44) in the normal band.

Concentration readings between 56 to 150µg/m3 fall within the elevated band, while readings between 151 and 250 are in the high-band — briefly recorded in western Singapore at 4pm on Wednesday.

In its daily haze situation update on Thursday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it expects the country's 24-hour PSI to be in the high-moderate to mid-unhealthy range.

It noted that moderate to dense smoke plumes from southern and central Sumatra and West Kalimantan were observed to drift towards Singapore.

Data from the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre shows 94 hotspots in Kalimantan on Oct 7, while there were 210 hotspots in Sumatra.

"Under the prevailing south-easterly or southerly winds, smoke haze may continue to drift towards Singapore.

"The 24-hr PSI for Singapore is forecast to be in the high-moderate to mid-unhealthy range."

Members of the public should check the latest one-hour PM2.5 concentration readings before participating in outdoor activities.

If PM2.5 concentration reading enters the high-band, healthy persons should avoid strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour, while vulnerable persons should avoid all outdoor activity for the next hour.
