MediAsas, a voluntary medical insurance plan, will launch nationwide at affordable prices in January 2027, as announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Private hospital bills will use a standard and transparent charges category from 2027 to improve patient cost understanding and reduce price distortions.

EPF contributors under 55 can use Akaun Sejahtera for MediAsas premiums, and the government will subsidise RM200 per worker for SMEs with fewer than 75 employees for the first year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — MediAsas, a voluntary medical insurance and takaful plan, will be launched nationwide at affordable prices in January 2027, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

While tabling Budget 2027 at Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said MediAsas would help keep hospital bills under control and more predictable according to diagnosis type.

“Starting 2027, private hospital bills must use a standard and transparent category of charges so that patients understand what they are paying and to reduce price distortions,” he said.

Anwar also said Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors under 55 years old can also tap into their Akaun Sejahtera to pay for MediAsas premiums.

The government will also extend a subsidy of RM200 per worker for MediAsas premiums for a maximum of 50 employees during the first year for small- and medium-sized enterprises comprising less than 75 employees.

Anwar also said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will continue implementing the electronic medical records system in all public healthcare facilities nationwide with a RM1 billion allocation.
