A Chinese tourist's Louis Vuitton bag was stolen during his first visit to Singapore, but he retrieved it within 20 minutes with some contents missing.
The tourist believes the theft was coordinated by a gang, with CCTV footage suggesting the involvement of another person who evaded cameras.
Singapore Police confirmed an investigation is ongoing after the tourist reported the incident, hoping for dashcam footage to aid the case.
SINGAPORE, Oct 11 — A Chinese tourist received a rude welcome to Singapore when his Louis Vuitton bag got stolen at Gardens by the Bay during his first visit to the country.
He managed to track the alleged thief and retrieve it within 20 minutes, but several of the items inside were gone.
User Lao Hei Livefree posted on Xiaohongshu: “It was truly an extraordinary trip. My first time abroad, even my first time leaving the country, my first time in Singapore, and I got robbed!”
Photos accompanying the post show him walking around Gardens by the Bay with a police officer, and at least three officers at the scene talking to him and handling his luxury handbag.
He also received a card from the police stating they would investigate it further.
Found the alleged thief by chance
Over several posts, Lao Hei Livefree explained that the alleged theft happened at around 9pm on Oct 5 after he saw a light show at the Supertree grove with his friends.
He had left his bag behind him and leaned forward to discuss the itinerary with them, but heard “a burst of rapid footsteps”.
Turning around, he discovered his bag was gone.
The tourist then tried to track it down using his wireless earphones to no avail. But figuring “the thief couldn’t have gone far”, he started walking towards an exit to block his path.
“Just then, I bumped into someone and waved my hand to ask for directions, but he took off running,” he added.
Suspicious, he gave chase and snatched a paper bag back from that man, only to find his luxury handbag inside.
The tourist discovered that some of its contents including his passport, pocket camera and livestreaming equipment were gone.
Even a sock he had left inside was missing, but an eyewitness told him that he had seen someone with his pocket camera and the rest of his belongings stuffed into the sock.
Lao Hei Livefree claimed that the alleged thief, who was dressed suspiciously in a black headscarf, managed to get away, disappearing into some bushes.
While he did not seem particularly bothered about the money lost, the tourist said he was concerned about getting his passport back.
Lao Hei Livefree said that he believes that the thief wasn’t acting alone, and part of a “gang”.
He also believes the man he caught may not have been the person who stole his bag either, but just there to collect the stolen items.
Claiming to have reviewed CCTV footage from Gardens by the Bay, the tourist said that the man had avoided cameras while in the park.
He had also allegedly parked at an area designated for buses, and entered through an exit and exited through an entrance.
“In this way, the surveillance cameras couldn’t capture his license plate,” the Xiaohongshu user explained.
He added that the CCTV footage allegedly showed the man park, open his car boot and leave.
When he returned, he appeared to toss something into the boot, close it and leave Gardens by the Bay, which makes him believe he was only there to pick up the stolen items.
The tourist added that he hoped other vehicles on the road have dashcam footage showing the getaway car’s license plate number to help with the police investigation.
However, as of posting his video on October 8, he had not received further updates from the police.

Lao Hei Livefree
