Sengkang GRC MP Assoc Prof Jamus Lim has been hospitalised since the weekend due to pneumonia.

The second-term MP said in a Facebook post on Monday (Oct 12): "Some of you may have seen a video of my sniffling away in Parliament last week. As it turns out, that sniffling eventually developed into a bad case of Influenza A, before culminating in full-blown pneumonia."

He was seen wearing a mask in Parliament on Oct 6.

Then, when speaking on the Finance (Income Taxes) Bill, he was seen pausing occasionally between sentences as he sniffled and wiped his nose.

Marine Parade-Braddell Heights MP Diana Pang later walked over and handed him a tissue.

At that time, Assoc Prof Lim told the House that he thought it could be due to the haze.

But over the weekend, his blood oxygen level fell to the low 90s, and he ended up being admitted to hospital.

The blood oxygen level for healthy people is between 95 to 100.

Assoc Prof Lim said he will not be attending his regular MP duties, including Monday's Meet-the-People Session (MPS), and other routine activities such as weekly house visits and estate walks.

However, his volunteers will continue to run MPS as usual.

"I'll do what I can on the back end to clear all appeal letters and to catch up on my email backlog, but I thank you for your patience in the meantime," he added.

Uptick in emergency department visits

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a community event in Sembawang on Sunday, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said there has been a rise in the number of people seeking treatment for respiratory ailments as haze conditions worsen.

"I think it is not just due to haze, but also because the haze season this year coincided with Influenza A season, so I think it compounded each other," said Ong, who is also Coordinating Minister for Social Policies.

The health minister also announced that the Ministry of Health will be activating both the Public Health Preparedness Clinic (PHPC) scheme and the Haze Subsidy Scheme (HSS) from Oct 12.
