Vocal ensemble The Island Voices wows with rendition of national anthem at Singapore GP: 'Getting chills'

As the Formula One racing teams and spectators stood in unison at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, crystal-clear vocals grew the familiar orchestra instrumental of Majulah Singapura into a harmonic crescendo.

On the grid of the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday (Oct 11), Singaporean vocal ensemble The Island Voice launched into a capella arrangement of the national anthem

The national anthem of the host nation is played pre-race. Singapore choirs typically perform it, with a previous a capella rendition sung by local band MICappella back in 2019.

The Island Voices, calling the opportunity its "greatest honour", shared broadcast footage of the performance online after the event where Red Bull's Max Verstappen won his first Singapore GP .

With 150,000 cumulative views across Instagram and TikTok, the award-winning group's soulful singing and layered harmonies have captured the hearts of netizens.

"I'm getting the chills! Wow," a TikTok user commented.

Many remarked that the "beautiful" vocal performance evoked feelings of patriotism in them, also asking for The Island Voices to perform at future National Day Parades.

Another added: "Top-tier song arrangement. Proud!"

Local artist Benjamin Kheng expressed his support too in an Instagram comment: "(You all) made Zubir Said smile with that one for sure."

Zubir is the composer of Majulah Singapura.

Founder of The Island Voices Owen Li said on Instagram that he worked on the vocal arrangement of the national anthem since August.

Together with fellow member emmeline, they "snuck in a lot of Singaporean Easter eggs", he added.

"I just hope that you (viewers) love it as much as we do."

More than 300,000 fans packed the Marina Bay Street Circuit from Oct 9 to 11 for the Singapore Grand Prix, which is the second best attendance till date.

The Island Voices performed at the DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre at Esplanade for the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix.

They also performed at the 2022 and 2023 National Day celebrations and featured in the 2025 National Day theme song Here We Are.
