A woman deceived members of the public into donating to charitable causes, then used the funds to pay for vacations and support her husband's business.

Anna Goh Li Bing, 39, was sentenced to two weeks' jail on Monday (Oct 12) after pleading guilty to a criminal breach of trust. One count of forgery was taken into consideration during her sentencing.

She had lied about raising funds to buy eggs for nursing homes and elderly people, according to court papers obtained by AsiaOne.

The court heard that Goh had asked for donations in a Facebook group dedicated to promoting charity work, reported The Straits Times.

In the October 2023 post, the woman said she wanted to purchase eggs at $2 per tray and distribute the food to a home for senior citizens in Jalan Kayu.

Donations were directly deposited into Goh's account as she had reportedly linked her personal mobile number and bank account details in the post.

But the egg distribution never happened.

Her scheme fell apart after a forged digital letter dated Nov 7, 2023 stated that the Jalan Kayu home had received 850 trays of eggs raised suspicions among some contributors.

Several donors reportedly filed police reports between November and December 2023 after making checks with the elderly home about the supposed donation.

Investigations found that Goh received more than $10,163 from 134 donors between Oct 3 and Nov 10, 2023.

She admitted to using the money for vacation expenses and to help her husband's business.

Goh made partial restitution after the probe began by delivering 4,500 eggs, worth $922, to the home between November 2023 and March 2026.

She has also transferred another $300 to the home separately. Over $8,940 of the funds remain unrecovered.
