In Jurong West, Singapore, an innovative homeowner ingeniously transformed an HDB block's exterior into a makeshift cinema by projecting a movie onto its wall using a portable projector.

This creative endeavor was captured and shared online by a nearby resident, Farhan, garnering significant attention with over 700,000 views on Instagram.

The unique setup was appreciated by netizens for its creativity and low-key charm, reminiscent of communal screenings from the past, and demonstrated an inventive use of common urban space without causing disturbance.

SINGAPORE, Oct 13 — An owner of a portable projector staged his own backyard movie night by cleverly using the exterior wall of a Jurong West HDB block as a screen.

The ingenious concept was noticed by a resident living in a nearby block, who shared the unusual sight online.

Instagram user Singaporeanstory, who wanted to be known as Farhan, told AsiaOne he had inadvertently stumbled upon the “mini cinema” set up in an open-air car park last Saturday (Oct 10) night.

“I just got home and happened to peek out of my kitchen window. I rubbed my eyes, looked again, smiled and took the shot,” the 40-year-old entrepreneur said.

The short video recorded by Farhan shows a clip of Freddie Mercury from the rock band Queen being beamed onto an HDB wall.

The projector appears to be stored in the boot of a parked car, and a foldable chair is seen near the vehicle’s rear.

“It’s so brazen that I can’t help but to admire,” Farhan wrote in the video caption. “You win liao lor.”

His Instagram video has since attracted over 700,000 views and 23,000 likes.

Farhan, who does art on the side, said he had never seen the video projection before.

“I thought it was absolutely brilliant and kicked myself for not thinking about it,” he shared with AsiaOne.

“What a great use of an otherwise unremarkable HDB wall. And the spot he picked absolutely didn’t disturb anyone.”

Netizens expressed surprise in the comment section, with some applauding the car driver’s creativity.

“This is so lowkey cute. People should really do stuff like these more often, and not be so uptight,” an Instagram user wrote.

Several also reminisced about the olden days when neighbours would gather to watch similar video projections.

“More kampong spirits of sharing with the communities (sic)?” one suggested.

Farhan told AsiaOne that he did not hear any noise, and the car driver appeared to be alone.

As he summed up in an Instagram comment: “Seeing Freddie Mercury prancing half naked on a HDB wall is the stuff of heartland magic.” — AsiaOne
