Haze update Oct 13: PSI remains unhealthy; 24-hour air quality forecast to stay unhealthy

Heavy rain over parts of northern, western and central Singapore on Tuesday (Oct 13) afternoon led to a slight improvement in air quality.

However, as at 8pm, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remained in the unhealthy range across Singapore.

The highest reading of 159 was recorded in the western region, with the next highest readings in central (152) and eastern (147) Singapore.

Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 concentration readings ranged from 60 in the northern region to 99 in western Singapore, placing all regions in the elevated band across the Republic.

In its daily haze situation update on Tuesday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) noted that moderate to dense smoke plumes were observed from fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra.

Smoke haze was also observed drifting towards Singapore under the prevailing southeasterly winds, the agency added.

And while showers are forecast over Singapore and parts of the surrounding region on Wednesday, dry conditions are expected to persist over parts of southern Sumatra and Kalimantan.

"With the prevailing easterly or southeasterly winds, smoke haze may still drift towards Singapore. The 24-hr PSI for Singapore is forecast to be in the unhealthy range," said NEA.

Members of the public should note that the health impact of haze depends on their health status, the PSI level, and the duration and intensity of outdoor activity.

They are advised to check the latest 1-hour PM2.5 concentration readings and corresponding health advisories before engaging in outdoor activities.
