KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — The government has settled tax overpayment refunds amounting to RM17.15 billion, involving 3.23 million taxpayer cases, for the period up to September 30, 2026.

According to the Ministry of Finance (MoF), this total included RM6.38 billion being refunded to 3.1 million individual taxpayers and RM8.95 billion being refunded to over 130,000 corporate taxpayers, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

To strengthen the processing of tax refunds, the Inland Revenue Board has implemented various strategies that are fairer and more equitable, ensuring that refund allocations from the government are distributed in an orderly and effective manner based on the age of outstanding cases, while also prioritising MSMEs and companies facing cash flow issues.

“The government is also committed to ensuring that outstanding refunds are fully settled promptly as part of efforts to enhance tax administration efficiency and safeguard taxpayers' rights, in line with the Madani government’s fiscal reform agenda,” the Ministry of Finance (MoF) said in a written reply published on the parliament website yesterday.

The ministry was replying to a question from Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH) regarding the timeframe for settling excess tax refunds and the two per cent compensation for corporate taxpayers for the 2025 year of assessment, as well as the amount of outstanding refunds according to the year of assessment and the number of affected taxpayers. — Bernama
