KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Efforts to promote creative content on digital platforms must go hand in hand with measures to protect children from online sexual crimes, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said this was necessary to support the government’s aspiration to strengthen the country’s creative economy through the production of quality and responsible digital content.

“We want to encourage the production of creative content, including on platforms such as YouTube. However, our challenge is to prevent crimes such as online child sexual exploitation and grooming.

“Our priority is to prevent children from using these platforms to communicate with adults who may seek to exploit them,” he told reporters after attending the Creators for Impact 2026 programme here today.

Fahmi said the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) continued to encourage creative content production, including on digital platforms, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s creative economy.

He said the Orange Economy Council, established to oversee policies and review programmes related to the creative economy, also supported efforts to develop the sector.

On the ‘Creators for Impact 2026’ programme organised by Google, Fahmi said the initiative exposed content creators to techniques for producing relevant content while incorporating online safety messages for audiences.

Earlier, in his speech, he said content creators could play a greater role in promoting responsible internet use among young people through engaging and relevant content.

He said closer cooperation between the government, technology companies and content creators was essential to ensure digital safety messages reached young people effectively. — Bernama
