AICHI (TR) – Police in Toyokawa City have arrested a 39-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of assault after his mother was found dead inside their shared residence, reports Nagoya TV (Oct. 12).

Takaya Terada is accused of punching his 64-year-old mother, Junko, in the face and causing injury sometime between Sunday evening and the following morning.

According to authorities, the suspect requires regular nursing care. The grim discovery was made on Monday morning when a staff member from a care facility arrived at the home to pick him up. The worker found Junko collapsed in the kitchen and immediately alerted the police.

Junko was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted multiple scratches and abrasions on her face, though her exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

Police have not disclosed whether Terada has admitted to the allegations. Investigators believe the suspect, who lived alone with the victim, knows the circumstances that led to his mother’s death and are continuing their questioning.
