In the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur, 20-year-old Chinese national Chen Jun pleaded not guilty to charges of grievous hurt for allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend, Leong Kai Ting, and her brother, Leong Shun Jie.

Charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code with potential penalties including up to 20 years in prison, Chen was granted bail at RM8,000 with additional conditions, despite the prosecution's request for no bail due to the severity of the charges.

The court acknowledged his depression and self-harm issues when deciding bail, with the case set for mention on November 11.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — A 20-year-old Chinese national university student pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to two charges of causing grievous hurt by stabbing his former girlfriend and her younger brother with a knife last month.

Chen Jun is accused of causing grievous hurt to Leong Kai Ting, 21, and her younger brother, Leong Shun Jie, 18, by stabbing them both with a knife capable of causing death. The alleged offences took place at a house in Taman Sri Bintang, Kepong, at 5 am on Sept 29.

The charges were brought under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 20 years and is liable to a fine or caning upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal did not offer bail, saying the offences were non-bailable.

“Should the court decide to grant bail, the prosecution requests that it be set at RM8,000 with two local sureties, and that the accused surrender his passport to the court,” she said.

Chen Jun’s lawyer Ling Yee Siew urged the court to reduce the bail amount, submitting that her client was pursuing a finance degree at a private university and did not pose a flight risk.

“According to a medical report dated Sept 14 from a private hospital, my client is suffering from depression.

“I therefore seek lower bail to enable him to obtain follow-up treatment for a leg injury he sustained through self-harm while experiencing depression,” she said. Chen Jun appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Judge Suhaila Haron granted Chen Jun bail of RM8,000 with two Malaysian sureties, subject to the prosecution’s additional conditions.

She then fixed Nov 11 for case mention. — Bernama
