Police launched an urgent manhunt in Yala on Thursday evening after attackers bombed a security forces base in Bannang Sata district. Five officers were injured when one of two pipe bombs detonated near their accommodation.

The second device failed to detonate. One officer suffered shrapnel wounds to his right leg and remains hospitalised. Four others were treated and discharged. In response, security forces sealed off the compound and raised security measures to their highest level. The attackers remain at large, while investigators seek to establish their identities and track their movements.

The attack occurred at approximately 6.40 pm on Thursday, October 15, in Village 3, Bannang Sata subdistrict, Yala province. Unknown assailants threw two bombs towards accommodation occupied by security personnel. One detonated near the troop quarters, injuring five officers. However, the second failed to detonate, leaving an unexploded device inside the compound.

Initial reports identify border patrol base as police confirm two injured officers in Yala bomb attack.

Initial reports identified the installation as an operational base used by the Bannang Sata Border Patrol Unit. Subsequently, the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command identified the target as a Subdistrict Protection Unit.

The unit was operating from the compound when the attackers struck. Both accounts placed the bombing at a staffed security installation in Bannang Sata district.

The first alarm came through radio communications at approximately 6.40 pm. Police received information that unknown attackers had thrown two grenades into the operational base. At that stage, the type and size of the devices remained unidentified. Nevertheless, the initial report established that one had detonated near personnel accommodation. The other remained unexploded.

Two officers were initially identified as casualties. Sergeant Major Harun Maseng suffered shrapnel injuries to his right leg. Meanwhile, Sergeant Major Ibrahim Tinguseng sustained bleeding from his ear following the blast. Both men were transported to Bannang Sata Hospital for treatment. Early reports carried by Thai PBS and Nation TV also placed the number of injured personnel at two.

Further information subsequently increased the casualty figure to five. The revised total emerged from the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command. Separately, Yala Provincial Radio Station, SWT Yala, published the updated account on its Facebook page. The security command confirmed that attackers had thrown two pipe bombs into the operational compound. Only one had detonated.

According to the updated report, all five injured personnel suffered injuries classified as minor. However, Sergeant Major Harun sustained the most significant reported wound. Shrapnel struck his right leg, requiring continued treatment at Bannang Sata Hospital. Consequently, he remained hospitalised on Friday morning while the other four officers had been discharged.

The remaining casualties suffered headaches and ringing in their ears following the explosion. Medical personnel examined and treated the four officers before allowing them to return home. Notably, the initial report had identified Sergeant Major Ibrahim as suffering bleeding from his ear. The subsequent security account described the other four casualties as experiencing headaches and ringing in their ears.

Conflicting casualty reports emerge as security forces raise alert levels following Yala base bombing

The casualty figures nevertheless remained inconsistent across the first reports. Thai PBS and Nation TV initially identified two injured officers. Later security information confirmed five. However, a Thai PBS evening broadcast referred to nine injured people, including civilians. That higher figure had not been reconciled with the regional security command’s account by Friday morning.

No confirmed breakdown of additional civilian casualties appeared in the available reports. The security command’s account specifically identified five injured personnel. Four had received treatment and returned home, while one remained hospitalised. Accordingly, five injured officers represented the latest casualty figure confirmed in the supplied security reports.

Meanwhile, the bombing triggered a coordinated security response involving three agencies. Personnel secured the installation and surrounding area immediately after the attack. Security measures were raised to their highest level. In parallel, police began efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible. Investigators also faced the task of examining the unexploded second bomb.

Bomb disposal teams face unexploded device as investigators examine weapons used in Yala base attack

Bomb disposal officers were expected to inspect the device as part of the investigation. However, the available reports did not confirm whether it had been removed or rendered safe. The second bomb had failed to detonate after being thrown towards the troop quarters. Its presence required specialist examination while security personnel maintained control of the compound.

The weapons were initially described as grenades of unknown type and size. Subsequently, the regional security command identified both devices as pipe bombs. Its account established that one detonated near the accommodation area. The second failed. The reports did not provide further technical details concerning either device.

Investigators were also examining the circumstances surrounding the assault. The available accounts established that an unknown number of attackers threw the devices into the base. However, their identities and precise number remained unconfirmed. Nor did the reports establish how closely the attackers approached the troop accommodation before launching the attack.

Furthermore, no confirmed information identified vehicles, escape routes or possible accomplices. The attackers escaped following the bombing. Police subsequently launched a search to identify and arrest those responsible. As part of the response, three agencies coordinated security measures and investigative work at the affected installation.

The regional security command reported that protection measures had been raised to their highest level. Its account also confirmed that efforts to apprehend the perpetrators were being expedited. Nevertheless, no arrests had been confirmed in the available reports by approximately 8.30 am on Friday, October 16.

There was also no conclusive identification of any organisation responsible for the bombing. The available reports attributed the attack to unknown assailants. No group had been conclusively linked to the incident. Likewise, investigators had not released confirmed information establishing the attackers’ identities or their movements after leaving the compound.

The bombing struck an operational security installation rather than an unoccupied facility. Personnel were present in the accommodation area when the attackers threw the devices. One bomb detonated close enough to injure five officers. The second remained unexploded, leaving investigators with another device to examine.

Overnight reports confirm five injured officers as Yala police continue manhunt after security base bombing

The incident was first reported on Thursday evening, with one account published at 9.13 pm. At that stage, reports identified two injured personnel and described the weapons as grenades. Overnight, additional information established the five-officer casualty figure and identified the weapons as pipe bombs. The regional security command also provided details of the officers’ medical conditions.

By Friday morning, Sergeant Major Harun remained at Bannang Sata Hospital with shrapnel injuries to his right leg. The other four officers had been treated and discharged. Meanwhile, security personnel continued their investigation into the bombing and the unexploded second device.

The immediate police operation remained focused on identifying and arresting the attackers. Three agencies were coordinating their response, while the affected installation remained subject to heightened security measures. However, investigators had not publicly established the number of perpetrators or their escape route.

The latest confirmed security account identified five injured officers, two pipe bombs and one detonation near personnel accommodation. Four casualties had returned home, while one remained hospitalised. The attackers remained at large on Friday morning as police continued their search and prepared to pursue prosecutions.
