THE news that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) had arrested a 44-year-old senior politician for alleged khalwat (close proximity) hit the headlines late Thursday night. Social media cyberdetectives and political circles quickly mapped out the clues and got the identity right.

On Friday, the online rumour mill shifted into overdrive when circulating CCTV footage seemed to confirm suspicions. The video shows the politician entering a lift in a residential block; he is joined shortly by a woman – which was followed by a frenzy of speculation across group chats and digital platforms.
