Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan urges alumni bodies to strengthen school support, highlighting a Budget 2027 tax incentive for contributions.

Budget 2027 allows tax deductions of up to 10% on cash contributions to school funds for operations, facilities, equipment, and student programmes.

Amir Hamzah underscores the role of alumni in improving educational experiences, advocating for contributions beyond financial assistance to benefit future generations.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — Alumni bodies have been urged to strengthen their support for schools, with Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan highlighting the tax incentive announced in Budget 2027 for contributions towards such efforts.

He said the government recognises the important role alumni play in supporting the Malaysian education system and their respective schools.

“As you have noticed in the budget announced last week, the government also embraces this journey and recognises the important role that alumni play,” he said at the St John’s Alumni Association Gala Dinner 2026 here last night.

Earlier, Amir Hamzah received the Eagle Award 2026.

Also present was Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican.

Under Budget 2027, cash contributions to Tabung Sumbangan Wang Awam Sekolah qualify for a tax deduction of up to 10 per cent of aggregate income, with the fund supporting school operations, facility repairs, equipment purchases and student programmes.

Amir Hamzah called on former students to give generously, stressing that their contributions should extend beyond financial assistance.

He said alumni bodies could play a pivotal role in improving educational experiences and helping younger generations benefit from the learning process that had shaped former students’ values and character.

“Most of us have been blessed with the privilege of being in school. Most of us have picked up the ethos that has made us different.

“What we want now is to embed the same ethos, same opportunity and the same privilege to the future generations that come,” he said.

Amir Hamzah expressed his appreciation for the St John’s Alumni Association’s initiatives covering economic well-being, education, scholastic excellence and sports development.

He said the association reaches out to those in need regardless of creed, race or background, demonstrating compassion and selfless service for the greater good of the people and Malaysia.

Recalling his school days, Amir Hamzah said he was deeply honoured to receive the award, 42 years after leaving St John’s Institution.

“Four decades ago, I may have left St John’s, but the reality is that the Johannian spirit has never left me.

“The bonds and friendship we have built over the years continue to be in our hearts and minds,” he said.

He urged alumni to continue contributing towards building a better nation and a stronger community, while leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. — Bernama
