Haze watch Oct 20: PM2.5 mostly low-elevated, but haze could return tonight

Residents in Singapore enjoyed a third consecutive day of better air quality on Tuesday (Oct 20) morning, with hourly PM2.5 mostly in the lower-end of the elevated band (56 to 150µg/m3).

The current spell, which has seen concentration readings remain in the normal to low-elevated band and 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the good-to-moderate to low-unhealthy range, is due to the turning of winds to blow from the south-southeast and showers in the vicinity.

But some haze from Kalimantan and Sumatra was still observed in the vicinity of Singapore, said the National Environment Agency in its daily haze situation update on Monday evening .

At 9am on Tuesday, the one-hour PM2.5 was in the normal band in the northern (44µg/m3) region. It is in the low-elevated band in southern (58), eastern (62), central (78) and western (84) Singapore.

Meanwhile, PSI is in the good-to-moderate range (PSI 0 to 100) in the northern (89), southern (97) and eastern (98) regions, while remaining in the low-unhealthy range in central (114) and western (125) Singapore.

Weather and haze forecast

Residents in Singapore can expect showers over Singapore and the surrounding region on Tuesday.

Under the influence of south-southeasterly winds, the smoke haze from Kalimantan to Singapore may again be reduced, but smoke haze from Sumatra may still drift towards Singapore, NEA stated.

It added that from Tuesday night, winds are likely to turn east-southeasterly with dry conditions forecast over the surrounding region, including parts of Kalimantan.

"This may bring smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan towards Singapore," NEA said, adding that the situation is forecast to last till Thursday.

The Republic's PSI forecast is 90 to 160 — in the moderate to unhealthy range.
