Blanket approach to shutting down pig farms ignores economic realities

Wawasan Deputy President and Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan’s call to shut down pig farms nationwide and replace local production with imported pork is an irresponsible overreaction that ignores economic realities, farmers’ livelihoods and Malaysia’s food security. A few problematic farms do not justify sacrificing an entire industry.

If certain pig farms cause environmental pollution, have inadequate wastewater treatment or breach hygiene standards, the authorities can enforce the law and require the operators concerned to rectify their shortcomings. Problems involving individual farms do not justify penalising an entire industry.

瓦瓦桑党副主席兼打谷莪国会议员万赛夫·万詹呼吁关闭全国养猪场，用进口猪肉取代本地猪肉，这种做法是不负责任的过度反应，罔顾经济现实、农民生计和马来西亚的粮食安全。少数几个问题养猪场并不能成为牺牲整个产业的理由。

如果某些养猪场造成环境污染、废水处理不达标或违反卫生标准，有关部门可以依法执法，要求相关经营者改正错误。个别养猪场的问题并不足以成为惩罚整个行业的理由。
